240-256 GB SSD Kingmax, QUMO, SmartBuy and Verbatim
– Today will will take a look at the Specs, Hashrate, CPU performance and also a testing of this SSD Drive. We will go into more details as it regards to the testing in the article below.

Small Standard Foreword

The solid state flash storage (SSD) market is under pressure from price competition. As a result, companies are forced to constantly seek ways to reduce production costs.

Manufacturers of the first echelon and “close” ones with special contracts (Crucial-Micron, Intel, LiteON, Plextor, Samsung, SanDisk, Toshiba, Transcend, etc.), as a rule, more or less comply with the original specifications of the released model, maneuvering in pricing policy due to a higher margin, as well as the scale of production. Although they can also present surprises.

Companies that order finished products from ODM / OEM-manufacturers with their own brands (ADATA, PQI, PNY, Silicon Power, SmartBuy, etc.) are often deprived of this opportunity. Therefore, they apply a policy of making the price cheaper by choosing cheap hardware configurations (non-original flash memory, asynchronous flash memory instead of synchronous one, simplified controller, etc.). In this case, the formal name of the model of this or that drive during its hardware “modernization” most often remains the same.

Therefore, when reading the review, you should also check the availability of newer materials on this model (not necessarily of the same volume) in the corresponding section of articles – as far as possible, we try to track changes in hardware platforms. There is a separate section on drives on Phison controllers – there is a special conversation about this developer (for example, GoodRAM C100, SmartBuy Ignition 2 and Silicon Power V55 / S55 were at one time the same drive, just with different labels and packaging).

And an overview of a particular drive at a certain moment turns into a historical reference for advanced readers and those who, by the will of fate, became the owner of the old configuration, which is often no less valuable than a reflection of the current state of affairs in the solid-state drive market. This is normal in view of the rapid growth and development of the latter.

Introduction

It has already become a classic of the genre when discussing SSDs to talk about the price threshold “1 dollar per 1 gigabyte”. And this is really so: due to a number of technological reasons, drives of this type are clearly not competitors in terms of cost in comparison with traditional drives on magnetic platters – HDDs. And it just so happened that an important threshold is the price in terms of one gigabyte of volume. And if in drives with a volume of up to 128 GB this price is still hovering around the indicated, for the most part, psychological barrier, then in the class of 250–256 GB this threshold has already been overcome quite a long time ago; and today you can find drives with a much lower “cost per gigabyte”. In fact, from the point of view of cost, this category of drives is the most optimal – even larger SSDs (480 GB and above) per gigabyte are more expensive: manufacturers have to use more capacious memory chips, and there is also an additional markup for the “image”.

For this review, we tried to select some of the cheapest drives with a volume of 240–256 GB from the price list of our regular partners – the Regard store. And the test participants were:

Kingmax SMP32 Client 240 Гбайт (KM240GSMP32)
: approximate price in Moscow retail – about 6150 rubles;

QUMO 240 GB (QMS240GU): approximate price in Moscow retail – about 6100 rubles;

SmartBuy Ignition 256 GB (SB256GB-IGNT-25SAT3; there is no model on the official website): approximate price in Moscow retail – about 6,000 rubles;

Verbatim 256 GB (Verbatim # 047618): approximate price in Moscow retail – about 6,000 rubles;

Prices are quoted at the time of this writing.

Kingmax SMP32 Client 240 Гбайт (KM240GSMP32)

The company that produced and still produces RAM under its own brand.

Almost the oldest modification in the SMP32 / SMP35 Client lineup: there is also a 480 GB drive, but it is less common on sale. It was not for nothing that I combined SMP32 Client and SMP35 Client together: the only difference is the presence of an adapter from the 2.5 ” to 3.5 ” form factor in the SMP35 Client. The drives themselves are exactly the same.

The disc is packed in a plastic box, only a warranty card and fastening screws are included

The body of the media is metal with a black coating, but using a simple design for the box, the designers decided to try to win back on the disc itself, providing it with a holographic effect label.

There are several different stickers on the bottom of the case, but they are of no value to the user – the manufacturer did not even indicate the factory version of the firmware.

Physically, it is based on MLC NAND, manufactured using the 25 nm process technology and operating in synchronous mode. Controller – LCI SandForce SF-2281. The carrier does not skimp on information about his work:

After creating the file system (MBR, NTFS), 223.57 GB becomes available to the user.

QUMO 240 GB (QMS240GU)

A brand that is not too familiar for the average Russian user, this is not surprising – its products are not found on sale very often. And for those who are more advanced, it is associated with USB drives, as well as memory cards of various formats.

A company whose products are focused on budget and ultra-budget segments. What will it offer in the SSD segment?

There is no complete set in principle, but at the same time there is a warranty card and a short instruction in full-fledged Russian (!) Language. The description of the drive on the box, by the way, is also given in Russian – the company did not skimp on translation. And the vendor’s site is equipped with a Russian-language mirror.

Of course, this is not QUMO’s own production: the drive, as usual, is ordered somewhere from a third-party manufacturer, and is simply branded. By the way, the design of the case is very much reminiscent of Samsung – exactly the same rough to the touch coating and the same beveled edges of the upper case cover.
450x488  53 KB. Big one: 1500x1627  369 KB

Well, since QUMO does not have its own engineering resources, we have before us the usual reference design from LSI: a drive based on LSI SandForce SF-2281. As a flash memory, 16 MLC NAND microcircuits of the Intel / Micron joint venture were used, produced according to the 25 nm process technology (marking 29F16B08CCME2), which operates in synchronous mode with the ONFi v2.2 interface. The physical volume of the drive is 256 GB, of which only 240 GB is available to the user (do not forget: in decimal notation), the remaining volume is traditionally reserved for drives based on SandForce controllers, which is used as a replacement fund for failed memory cells, storage of control ECC amounts as well as wear leveling. Note the firmware version: it has been renamed.
388x450  50 KB. Big one: 648x752  124 KB

The SMART drive is quite detailed, after creating the file system (MBR, NTFS), 223.57 GB becomes available to the user.
