3D-printed inserts for football helmets will provide players with better protection

Today, 3D printers are used to build bridges, create complex parts of much more elaborate devices and even save lives, according to an announcement by Riddell, a soccer equipment manufacturer and a company specializing in Carbon 3D printing. Their collaboration has shown that 3D-printed football helmet inserts provide better protection.

Football is by far one of the most brutal sports in which injuries occur more frequently than when playing Dark Souls. Traditionally, the most dangerous ones concern the head, which is protected only by an extensive helmet, created for players with one hoof. And it is here that the aforementioned companies saw a revolution, because their idea of 3D printing inserts fitted to an individual head on request is to reduce the risk of injury.

These inserts are to be manufactured with an elastomeric lattice structure made of a custom resin material. They shall be designed to regain their original shape upon impact which causes normal helmet covers to change shape. They are to be individualized and designed to fit perfectly on the athlete’s head, providing better protection inside the helmet. For now, the liner will only be available soon for the Riddell SpeedFlex Precision Diamond Helmet, which was reportedly used by a select few NFL players during the 2018 season.

The idea has a chance of success, as the NFL itself has taken steps to mitigate the effects of incidents on the pitch, in which the head is particularly at risk. Another producer came up with the idea of recording a potentially dangerous strike to stop players from continuing to play after solid strokes.
