7 solutions for when AirPods don’t work with phone calls

Sometimes, AirPods don’t work despite being connected to your iPhone and it can be worrying. However, it’s a completely different (and rather bizarre) problem when AirPods don’t work with phone calls, but work flawlessly with other apps. This can be quite problematic when you can’t answer calls. In this post, we’ll walk you through the reasons why your AirPods aren’t working for phone calls and how to fix it.

Before proceeding, make sure your AirPods are charged or have enough charge. Also, we suggest you call another person in your contact list. If the AirPods don’t make sound when you phone a contact, the problem could also be on the person’s side. Maybe you can’t hear anything due to network problems or the person’s microphone is having trouble. If your AirPods are not working with all phone calls, regardless of contact, you should try the solutions to the problem listed below.

Step 2: select your AirPods from the list of compatible audio devices.

If your AirPods don’t appear in the audio device list, they most likely aren’t connected to your phone. To check if the AirPods are connected to your iPhone, long press the Bluetooth icon in Control Center. Your AirPods should appear under the Bluetooth icon when connected to your iPhone.

Alternatively, go to your iPhone’s Bluetooth Settings menu and check if AirPods are labeled as connected.

2. Check the volume of the AirPods

It is also possible that no sound is produced during calls because the volume of the AirPods is low or muted. If you’ve selected AirPods as your preferred audio device on the call screen, but still can’t hear the other person talking, we recommend checking the volume on your AirPods. Tap one of the volume buttons on your iPhone to control the volume of the AirPods.

Check the volume level of the AirPods on the indicator that opens at the top left of the screen. Tap the volume up button on the screen to increase the volume of the AirPods. So, check if they work for phone calls.

3. Turn Bluetooth back on on iPhone

Restart your phone’s connection with the AirPods by turning off your iPhone’s Bluetooth and turning it back on. Before that, unplug the AirPods from your ears and put them in the charging case. Now, take them out and place the AirPods back in your ears and try making a phone call.

4. Reset AirPods

If your AirPods still don’t work during phone calls, you may need to reset them. This means that you will need to remove AirPods from your iPhone’s “paired Bluetooth devices” memory and reconnect from scratch. Open the AirPods Bluetooth settings page on your iPhone and select “Forget this Device”.

To reconnect both devices, keep both AirPods in the charging case. With the charging case close to the phone (about 5 meters), open the case of the AirPods and press and hold the setup button on the back to put the AirPods into pairing mode.

Follow the instructions on the phone display to connect the AirPods to your iPhone.

5. Reset your network settings

As with other iPhone users who have experienced similar problems, resetting your iPhone’s network settings could help solve the problem. I understand it looks out of place, but it worked. This will erase all wireless network settings and eliminate any Bluetooth-related glitches that cause the AirPods to malfunction during phone calls.

Go to Settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings to update your iPhone’s Bluetooth configurations. It is worth pointing out that other network-related settings (Wi-Fi, VPN, etc.) will also be reset to factory settings as a result. Learn more about what happens when you reset network settings (on iOS and Android).

6. Check the Bluetooth access

You may have difficulty using the AirPods for certain activities if some apps are using your iPhone’s Bluetooth at the same time. In an Apple community thread, we found that several iOS users were able to fix the AirPods not working for phone calls by disabling Bluetooth access for a particular application – the Tile app. If you have the app installed on your iPhone, try disabling its Bluetooth access.

To control apps using your iPhone’s Bluetooth, go to Settings> Privacy> Bluetooth. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth access for apps in the list and check if you can now make calls with AirPods.

7. Update iOS

Sometimes, running outdated or beta / build iOS versions on your iPhone is the basis of AirPods connectivity and usage issues. If your iPhone’s operating system is out of date, you should install the latest version of iOS as soon as possible. If you’re having trouble with beta builds, consider making a full backup of your iPhone and install a stable iOS build.
