AMD can launch the next generation of graphics cards with Firepro – investing in GPGPU

This year’s graphics card launches have so far been marked by Nvidia’s introduction of the Geforce GTX 700 series, but after the summer months, it’s AMD’s turn to lift the veil and present the next generation of graphics processors. These are the successors to today’s Radeon HD 7000 series and models that, among other things, go up against the flagship Geforce GTX 780.

According to SweClockers, AMD plans to introduce the most expensive graphics processor Hawaii as early as September, but primarily for professional users through one or more graphics cards in the Firepro series. The emphasis is on general calculations via the open interface OpenCL, which AMD uses to compete with Nvidia’s proprietary CUDA.

If so, the launch of AMD Hawaii may reflect that of the Nvidia GK110, which was first introduced in the Tesla computing cards and later used for the Geforce GTX Titan and GTX 780 consumer models.

One reason for this is products for the professional market sell in lower volumes but at higher prices than the usual graphics cards. It fits well at the beginning of the production cycle, as the proportion of working circuits per wafer (yield) is often low.

However, it does not take long before AMD’s next generation graphics processors also become part of the Radeon series. AMD is the exclusive hardware partner for Battlefield 4 and will have new products on the market before launch on October 31.
