AMD is considering Radeon Image Sharpening for the RX Vega series and Radeon VII

With the Radeon RX 5700 family and associated architecture Radeon DNA (RDNA), AMD introduced a technology called Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS). This uses a combination of algorithms for increased image sharpness and upscaling of resolution to provide better image quality with little impact on performance.

Initially, support for RIS technology was limited to graphics cards in the Radeon RX 5700 series. This has subsequently been expanded to also cover the Polaris-based graphics cards in the Radeon RX 400 and RX 500 families. However, graphics cards with the Vega architecture do not support RIS, and AMD has not yet announced the reason for its absence there.

However, in an interview with technology site PCGamesn, AMD announces that the company is considering expanding support for Radeon Image Sharpening to more product families. AMD has no plans to introduce RIS in Vega-based graphics cards today, but this may change in the future.

AMD has launched a survey in which the company’s customers can vote on which features they would like to see in future updates of the driver Radeon Software Adrenalin. One of the options customers can vote for is just expanded support for Radeon Image Sharpening, which is currently in second place in the poll, close to pixel scaling.

There is no guarantee that the option that gets the most votes in the poll will actually be implemented, but the probability should increase. AMD does not announce a timeline for when the results of the poll will be considered in the development of the drivers.

Are you using a Vega-based graphics card and do not have Radeon Image Sharpening support? Is any other alternative in the survey more important? Share in the comments!
