AMD is said to be working on Navi 10 graphics cards for crypto calculations

In recent years, speculators on AMD’s and Nvidia’s new graphics cards have for periods not been able to get hold of products, which is partly attributed to the fact that large quantities have been bought up for calculating cryptocurrencies. The graphics cards purchased for this purpose have been nicknamed “mining cards”, and have at times been a problem for those who want to buy a new graphics card.

It seems that AMD’s answer to this problem may be to launch graphics cards specifically designed for use with crypto- “mining”. According to a report from Phoronix, which keeps a watchful eye on the Linux kernel, new code extensions contain references to just that. The source code contains a description of the graphics card named “navi10 blockchain SKU”. Navi 10 suggests that the graphics circuit is based on the RDNA 1.0 architecture used in the Radeon RX 5700 cards.

The word “blockchain” reveals that graphics cards should handle the blockchains used to decentralize and track transactions with cryptocurrencies. The product has the device ID 0x731E and according to Phoronix, the big difference between the Navi 10 for consumer graphics cards and cryptocurrencies is that the latter lacks functions for media and image outputs.

Examples of consumer-focused features that are not active with the 0x731E include video devices for video, Display Core Next (DCN) and Video Core Next (VCN). It does not appear if these functions are only turned off or if they are not physically in place on the graphics circuit. The lack of these functions is completely logical in crypto-focused calculation units, as their only task is to process algorithms without the need for image outputs and media handling.

Crypto-calculations are not as large a market as they have been in previous years, as it has largely switched to applying specialized ASIC circuits for the purpose. If the references in the Linux code are correct, AMD’s Navi 10 crypto cards will be launched at the beginning of 2021 at the earliest, and in that case could ensure that fewer Radeon RX 6000 cards go to crypto diggers and more to game-hungry consumers.
