AMD launches Radeon HD 7790 “Bonaire”

After a period of rumors, speculation and previews, AMD is taking the plunge and launching the Radeon HD 7790. The new graphics card takes up space between the Radeon HD 7770 and HD 7850 in the company’s range, which means a mid-range model.

The main feature of the Radeon HD 7790 is a brand new graphics circuit with roots in the mobile segment. Under the name “Bonaire” is hidden 896 stream processors in 1.0 GHz distributed on 14 computing units according to the architecture Graphics Core Next (GCN).

The reference model has 1 GB of GDDR5 at 6.0 GHz on a 128-bit memory bus, resulting in a bandwidth of 96 GB / s. Other features include a TDP value of low 85 W, as well as support for DirectX 11.1, Eyefinity and Crossfire.

With the Radeon HD 7790, AMD also introduces a new version of the Powertune technology. Previous three frequency steps with a fourth “boost” mode are extended to a total of eight, each with custom settings. The updated version of Powertune can change performance mode in just 10 milliseconds, where active step is selected according to the parameters load, power consumption and temperature.

When it comes to reading in software, such as GPU-Z or MSI Afterburner, not every single step is reported. The graphics card instead presents an “effective clock frequency”, in practice an average value for the last 50 milliseconds.

When it comes to the graphics cards themselves, AMD is investing heavily in special models from partners for the Radeon HD 7790, the reference variant ends up in the back seat. Manufacturers such as Asus, MSI, Sapphire and Gigabyte are all ready with graphics cards, where things like clock frequencies and coolers vary.

The AMD Radeon HD 7790 will be in stores around April 2, ie in just under two weeks. The recommended price tag is 149 dollars, corresponding to approximately 1,200 kronor including VAT. SweClockers has chosen to wait for additional models for the test lab and will return with a review shortly.
