AMD presents the Radeon RX 6000 and reaches in performance to the RTX 3090

AMD has introduced the graphics cards Radeon RX 6800, RX 6800 XT y RX 6900 XT as first models of the new graphic architecture RDNA2.

The new AMD graphics cards have finally arrived, three models that cover a good part of the gaming range and that they arrive to face the NVIDIA RTX 30 that are giving so much to talk about. Although we have been able to see some performance data through leaks, and we also saw these new graphics appear in different games such as Fortnite through something like Easter Eggs to different players, so since then we were able to know what they would look like on the outside. Now it is AMD who officially launches these graphics with its own performance data.

Up to 54% more performance per watt with RDNA 2

The architecture RDNA 2 represents a 54% improvement in performance per watt consumed relative to RDNA. Their original proposal was to reach 50% but they exceeded that amount.

Also, these chips are manufactured at 7 nm like the previous ones, so it is an improvement of the architecture on equal terms. Thanks to the improvement of the manufacturing node over the years, AMD has achieved a 30% improvement in frequencies.

In addition, AMD graphics with RDNA 2 incorporates the technology for the first time AMD Smart Access Memory, which enables quickly access graphics memory directly from the processor without going through the chipset. This will be possible when using Ryzen 5000 processors together with the Radeon RX 6000.

AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT puts the RTX 3090 in serious trouble

The top of the range, at least in the first initial outing, will be the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT with no less than 80 Compute Units and 16 GB GDDR6. The base speed is 2015 MHz and in turbo it goes up to 2250 MHz. On the other hand, TDP reaches 300W, a consumption comparable to the RTX 3080 but offering a performance comparable to the RTX 3090.

In this way, the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT is positioned as a firm competition to the all powerful NVIDIA RTX 3090, with a much lower price.

The AMD RX 6800 XT already outperforms the NVIDIA RTX 3080 in performance, costing and consuming less

The next model turns out to be the intermediate one. It’s about the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT and comes with 72 CUs y 16 GB GDDR6. Its 16 GB of VRAM and its core (2015 MHz base and 2250 MHz boost) make it possible for the performance of this graph to exceed that of the NVIDIA RTX 3080. The TDP in this case is 300 W and, with a lower TDP, this model already surpasses the NVIDIA RTX 3080 in games tested by AMD.

The Radeon RX 6800 will offer better performance than the RTX 2080 Ti

To start the range, As an entry model, AMD proposes the Radeon RX 6800. This model has 60 Compute Units and a base speed of 1815 MHz that reaches 2015 MHz in boost. The TDP is reduced to 250 W but maintains 16 GB of VRAM, a constant in the three models released today by AMD. The manufacturer compares its Radeon RX 6800 with the NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti, beating it in practically all the tests carried out and thus putting it on par with the recently launched RTX 3070.

As a visual comparison, AMD has shown us its new graphics compared to the NVIDIA RTX 3080 and 3090 where we can see that they have achieved a smaller card format than their competitors and with a lower TDP.

Although AMD has ensured that the RX 6000 will have support for Raytracing under DirectX12, it has not been specified if they will have some type of dedicated hardware in the GPU as it happens with the RT Cores of the RTX 2000 and RTX 3000 from NVIDIA. Nor has it been mentioned whether these cards will have Artificial Intelligence capabilities by their own hardware, such as the Tensor Cores that NVIDIA uses to apply in technologies such as DLSS 2.0.

AMD has revealed the availability and prices of the Radeon RX 6000 and they are as follows:

  • AMD Radeon RX 6800: $ 579 on November 18
  • AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT: $ 649 on November 18
  • AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT: $ 999 on December 8
