AMD presents the Radeon RX 6600 XT with 1080p gaming in the binoculars

The graphic architecture RDNA 2 debuted last autumn and cuts the last bands to old Graphics Core Next, while the top models in the series can be compared to Nvidia in the top performance segment. The Radeon RX 6000 series is, however, so far exclusive to high-performance cards, but in full accordance with rumors, AMD is now taking the opportunity to present the mid-range RX 6600 XT.

Via information on misleading paths, the card has figured in the news flow for months, which is why the official launch does not offer any world-changing surprises. The Radeon RX 6600 XT is based on the graphics circuit Navi 23, which is also available with the RX 6600M for laptops. The new model comes with 32 computing units (CU) and thus 2,048 stream processors, accompanied by 8 GB of GDDR6 memory.

During the presentation, AMD emphasizes that most people play in 1080p resolution and that a high proportion of all game screens sold combine high frame rate with this resolution. The Radeon RX 6600 XT is aimed at those who are stuck with the resolution. The company therefore compares it to the immensely popular Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 from 2016, alongside promises of up to 2.5 times higher frame rates in games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077.

The new addition is claimed to be on average 15 percent faster than Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3060, but all figures are signed AMD and should therefore be taken with a pinch of salt. The small print reads that all tests are performed with Smart Access Memory (SAM) enabled on the AMD card. This is also used when the company points to the performance boost in 1080p resolution that the Radeon RX 6600 XT brings over the RX 5700 and RX 5600 XT from the previous generation. 1.4-1.7 times more frames per second are specified here.

In short, the SAM processor gives access to the entire graphics memory, which can give from a non-existent to a significant boost in performance, but compatible Ryzen processor and control circuit is required. Among the Radeon-specific features that the RX 6600 XT adds in addition to older cards is visible Anti-lag and the recent Fidelity FX Super Resolution (FSR) upscaling technology. The latter is described by AMD as a key component for an even higher frame rate in 1080p with the possibility of using the card ray tracingsupport, or to be able to play in 1440p.

The Radeon RX 6600 XT is clearly adapted for just 1080p gaming, which is mainly seen on the memory side where 8 GB of GDDR6 memory has a memory bandwidth of 256 GB / s and a narrow 128-bit bus. Even with the more powerful cards in the RX 6000 series, the bus is narrow, but this is compensated with 96–128 MB Infinity Cache. With the newcomer, this is scaled down to a paltry 32 MB, which AMD believes should be dimensioned for 1080p gaming. The PCI Express connection is also scaled down to x8 electrically, but the manufacturer does not believe that there is any load relevant to the card that could encounter problems due to this.

The newcomer has Total Board Power (TBP) specified at 160 watts and AMD explains that most cards will be equipped with a single 8-pin PCI Express connection for power supply. The company’s presentation images show a graphics card equipped with a fan and aesthetics in accordance with previous Radeon RX 6000 cards, but let it be known that a reference model is missing. Instead, partner manufacturers such as Asrock, Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, XFX and Sapphire stand for a charging card that ranges from compact format with a fan to oversized three-fan options.

Without a reference card, the guarantee that some cards will be sold for the exposed target price of USD 379 disappears. This is USD 50 higher than Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3060 or USD 100 lower than the big sibling RX 6700 XT, where the latter in Sweden has a recommended price of SEK 5,099. The RX 6600 XT should thus receive a target price of just under SEK 4,000, but since target prices are currently almost never complied with, it remains to be seen what the prices will be when the graphics cards land in stores on 11 August.
