An omnidirectional wireless charger created by scientists solves the biggest problem of traditional models

The work of Aalto University physicists was published in IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and it is hardly surprising, because their experimental wireless charger solves the biggest problem of the “traditional” models on the market. An omni-directional wireless charger is involved.

Scientists have created an omni-directional wireless charger that can charge multiple devices at the same time

This is not the first time we hear about an attempt to create multidirectional wireless chargers, but the newest stands out as being a simpler, cheaper and at the same time highly functional alternative to earlier prototypes. The heart of this new charger is a cylindrical coil, the wires of which are wound in opposite directions at the top and bottom, which are connected by a Z-bridge.

As the current flows through these windings in opposite directions, they create complementary magnetic fields. One field exits from the center of the cylindrical coil, surrounds the upper winding, and returns to the center through the top. The second one flows from the center, surrounds the lower winding, and returns to the center from the bottom

As a result of this coil guidance, a ring-shaped electromagnetic field is created surrounding the center of the cylindrical charger and within the range considered safe for human use. As a result, all electronic devices placed anywhere on this ring will charge efficiently, regardless of their orientation and position. However, this is not the final product, as engineers are currently working on increasing the power of the field, while ensuring that it still meets safety standards.
