I can venture to say that each of you car has something that the next Koenigsegg supercar won’t need. This is something that controls the valves of each cylinder, i.e. the camshaft, so it’s quite an important part of any engine. So what will the company replace it with?
Let’s start with the fact that Koenigsegg is currently working on a new hybrid supercar worth around 1 million euros to increase annual sales to several hundred cars. It is this model that will have an engine without the mentioned shaft, which the company will be able to achieve thanks to its innovative Freevalve technology.
This replaces the camshaft that opens and closes the engine’s valves with pneumatic actuators, which allow much more control over the operation of the engine. In theory, an engine with Freevalve can run on both diesel and gas or gasoline without the need for any mechanical changes (not at the same time, of course), and can even go from a two-stroke cycle to a four-stroke cycle.
Koenigsegg at the Freevalve presentation compared a camshaft to a broom… which the musician uses to play the piano, while the actuators obviously correspond to the fingers. We will have to wait for more information.
