Antminer S17 VS S17 Pro - Profitability, Payback, Specs

Antminer S17 VS S17 Pro – When Bitmain announced the launch of the 17 series of its ASICs to undermine the SHA256 algorithm of the Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash networks. The most powerful of these miners reaches a power of 53-62 TH / s with an energy consumption that can be configured at the owner’s convenience.

The AntMiner S17 Pro, AntMiner S17 and Antminer T17 equipment, make up this new Bitmain series, which is characterized by bringing a new 7nm second-generation chip, identified as BM1397, and which differs from the previously installed in the S15 Y miners T15

According to a company statement, at the moment only the AntMiner S17 Pro and the AntMiner S17 will be marketed, which will be offered between April 8 and 9 in the Americas, including South America, being the last delivery day April days. They also stressed that the Antminer T17 will have a later sale date.

The AntMiner S17 Pro can reach a maximum processing power of 53 TH / s or 62 TH / s, depending on the equipment and configuration. Both the S17 Pro and the S17 can configure their power consumption by customizing the mining mode.

In this case, both miners have three modalities, identified as turbo mode, which reaches an efficiency of 47 J / TH, normal with 39 J / TH and a low yield of 36 J / TH. Among other details of this miner, it is known that it weighs about 11 kilos and it has not yet been reported how much it will cost.

If we refer to the level of processing power and performance of the previous Bitmain miners with 7nm chip, it can be seen that this new series has improved their numbers. The Antminer S15, the most powerful in the series so far, only reached a hash rate of 28 TH / s, with an efficiency of 57 J / TH. As if that were not enough, this team brought with it constant security problems that generated a controversial sound in the community.

The series also stands out among its closest competitors. For example, at the end of 2018 Innosilicon launched its most powerful miner, the Terminator 3 that reaches a processing power of 43 TH / s and consumes a total of 2100 W. Said miner outperforms the GMO ASIC B3 that achieves a hashrate of 33 TH / s and the AvalonMiner10 that reaches a processing power of 31 TH / s. However, all these figures have been surpassed by the new Bitmain series, which records the record of the miners with the highest processing power in the Bitcoin market to date.

The company confirmed on Twitter the start of sales on April 9 and simultaneously disclosed the characteristics of the new models.

Specification – Bitmain Antminer S17

The youngest models in the line will be able to work in two modes (Low-power and Normal) and promise:

– 53 Th / s based on the SHA-256 algorithm (first model) with a consumption of 2,385 W;

– 56 Th / s (second model) with a consumption of 2,520 watts.

Turbo mode is not provided by the manufacturer. The energy efficiency of the ASIC will be 45 and 42 J / terahash in normal and energy efficient modes, respectively, for both models.

Specification – Bitmain Antminer S17 Pro

Antminer S17 Pro is developed in two versions: a model for 53 Th / s and 50 Th / s, with three mining modes: regular, economy and turbo (Boost), which provides ample opportunities for individual settings in accordance with the situation on the mining market.

Hashrate: 36 Th / s-48 Th / s (low power), 53 Th / s (Normal), 53 Th / s-62 Th / s (Turbo).

Power Consumption: 1296-2790 watts.

The noise from the working device is 82 dB.

Weight – about 9.5 kg.

In turbo mode, the S17 Pro has an efficiency of 45 J / terahash. Normal mode produces 39.5 J / terahash, while low power delivers 36 J / terahesh.

The high hash spread is interesting when working in different modes. Most likely, this is due to the fact that Bitmain implements rather “raw” devices and the process of chip production on the 7 nm process technology of the new version is not fully debugged. They are not ready to work in different modes. Bitmain, not wanting to engage in expensive sorting of essentially usable chips, programmatically disables them in these modes in the finished product when it is checked at the production stage.

The characteristics of the Antminer T17 have not yet been announced, it will go on sale a little later. According to tradition, this is a stripped-down model with less power consumption and lower hashrate

Thus, the new devices represent an attempt by Bitmain to regain market dominance and provide profit to miners. However, if you have old ASIC S9j or other miners,  do not rush to part with them. To disperse them, you can use immersion cooling. The payback period for new power supplies and installation on immersion cooling does not exceed 210 days (while maintaining the current situation in the cryptocurrency market and the cost of electricity is 0.05 USD per 1 kW / h). This is equivalent only to the payback period of Bitmain Antminer S17 Pro (50 Th), and surpasses the other ASICs in terms of payback period.

However, we know how to fix the situation with new models. Order an immersion-cooled installation, which could guarantees acceleration to 40% and a proportional increase in hashrate. This means that even new ASICs will pay off several months faster than runoff air-cooled.
