In Google Play you can do a search with the keywords “notifications bar” or “status bar” to find several applications that allow you to change the Android notification bar in one way or another. Perhaps the most complete and satisfactory application of all of them is Super Status Bar, that you can download for free, which allows you to completely alter the status bar of our Android without root.

With this application we can completely change the appearance of the notification bar. If you want to change the color of the bar, put a custom background, change the style of the icons, vary the font of the time, it is possible thanks to it. There is no other so complete alternative that allows us to do all this and much more easily and quickly.

As for how it is used, everything will be a matter of installing, running the application and giving it all the permissions it requests. Additionally, and very important, it is necessary to deactivate the system’s battery saving for this APP, something that you can know how to do on the website dontkillmyapp.com. If you do not disable this functionality correctly, the app will close and you will not see your custom status bar. Restart the device once you have done all of this.

Once inside the app, activate the “Start” button to activate it and you should already see your status bar change. If you don’t like the default settings, you have many controls available to change the appearance and even functionality of the status bar. You can choose between multiple default bar designs (some free and others only available in the paid version of the app), colors, icons, size or height of the status bar (something very good on my Huawei, where the bar and icons they are very small) and even option to see dynamic pop-up notifications.

Unfortunately not all changes are possible due to the limitations of the current Android versions. For example, the transparent notification bar cannot be done, unless you have root permissions, as indicated below. Other things like the position of the icons or the replacement of some of them independently do not work on some computers. Other features such as disabling pop-up notifications require the activation of special permissions in the app from a PC using the ADB software.

Beyond the cosmetic changes that Super Status Bar allows, there is the extra functionality it adds to the status bar. One of the most useful things is to be able to drag on it to regulate the brightness of the screen, although you can configure that gesture to control the volume of the device. You can configure other gestures to add other actions, such as shortcuts to apps, activate the flashlight, turn off the screen, take a screenshot, etc.

Several of the limitations indicated above did not exist in older versions of Android, such as the location of the icons in the status bar and their independent customization. There was an application, also called Super Status Bar, that achieved these changes and even allowed to individually change the appearance of the icons, such as the wifi, Battery, cellular signal, as seen in the screenshots above. Transparent notification bar

The semi-transparent status bar was a feature introduced in Android 4.4, and improved with the arrival of Android 5, where app developers were able to make this status bar completely transparent or assign it a solid color that “blends” with the colors an application uses.

Obviously, this depends on each application, but if you have root permissions on your phone, you can apply this change at the Android system level so that it affects all applications. You can even have transparency applied to the expanded notification bar and quick settings.

This process, as stated in this YouTube video, requires you to change a few lines in the SystemUI.apk file, using the APK Editor application, and once this is done, save this modified file back to its respective directory and restart the computer.

The downside is that this SystemUI.apk file, once modified, cannot be saved in the directory to which it belongs, unless you have root permissions. That is why it is necessary to have a rooted Android to achieve this. In addition, there is the possibility that restarting the computer will cause this change to bootloop the device, so that it will not reboot. Therefore, before trying to do this it is highly recommended to have a nandroid backup or system backup.
