2021 is not the best year for a gaming PC. Due to the shortage, the cost of components is growing, and the prices for video cards are sometimes more than half the recommended ones. As a result, many are trying to sit out the mining boom with plugs in the hope of purchasing a suitable video accelerator in the near future. ASUS GeForce GT 710 Silent LP just belongs to such office solutions.

Despite the fact that the main task of this graphics accelerator is simply displaying images of undemanding graphics applications on screens, we decided to arrange a hardcore test for the card. Today we will find out what the ASUS GeForce GT 710 Silent LP is capable of in principle.

Specifications

The card was released back in 2014 on the Kepler core and, compared to its predecessor, received twice as much faster memory – as much as 2 GB GDDR5. Unfortunately, the width of the memory bus has not grown (64-bit), which already clearly hints at low gaming suitability.

At its peak, according to the documents, the card consumes only 19 W, occupies one expansion slot and stands out for its low profile – it will fit into almost any compact office assembly and does not require a powerful power supply. Naturally, the device consumes power from the PCI-E slot. The DNS website states that the card is not LHR – shouldn’t we test it in mining?

A sufficiently large, stylish-looking passive radiator is responsible for heat dissipation – no roar of coolers for gaming cooling systems. The key advantage over similar office solutions is the image output ports – there are as many as three of them here, for every taste. HDMI, VGA, DVI-D – and yes, you can connect all three displays at the same time! A paradise for multitasking enthusiasts with a maximum resolution of one port up to 4K.

Why bother with the GT710?

In addition to the obvious office use, the purchase of this graphics accelerator can be useful in a number of other life situations. For example:

  1. You are assembling a powerful computer, there is enough for components, but there is no money for a productive video card. In this case, in a pair to the hypothetical Ryzen 5 2600-3600 without integrated video, it is quite possible to take such a plug for the first time. When the mining boom subsides and prices settle down, a graphics accelerator for an already modern system can be purchased.
  2. You want to revive an old computer a little with built-in – for example, with Intel HD Graphics 2500. At the same time, the hypothetical i5-3470 processor is still suitable for your tasks in terms of power.
  3. You are morally not ready to pay 300 dollars for a new 1050Ti and do not trust the aftermarket.
  4. You have a monitor with a VGA connection, but you don’t want to buy a new one with HDMI or DVI.
  5. Your RTX 3080 burned out in mining and the processor does not have an embedded core. There is no money for a more powerful card now, but you need to return the computer to operation now, and with minimal losses.
  6. For work, you need several monitors, a powerful video accelerator is useless, and for some reason you do not want an embedded AMD device.

Judging by the fact that prices even for office video cards are growing, they are in high demand. It is unlikely that the decisive role here is played by the shortage of components, because the GT 710 is always in stock or on order.

Equipment

The card comes in a cardboard box with an aggressive print.

On it you can also read information about the key benefits that (in general terms) have already been listed earlier. Ascetic kit – map and documentation. Let’s put it into our computer and test it.

Office tasks

Let’s start with what the card was intended for and we will move on an ascending basis. Test stand:

  • AMD Ryzen 3600;
  • Patriot Viper Steel 32 GB with two dies operating at 3200 Mhz;
  • ASUS TUF B450-PRO GAMING;
  • external, fast enough SSD Samsung T5 connected to USB 3.2 Gen1 Type C port;
  • three monitors with different connection interfaces, the maximum resolution of one of them is 2K.

We connect all monitors and boot into the system. As promised by the manufacturer, all three have been determined and are working flawlessly.

2K Monique Benq started at the maximum frequency for itself. Unfortunately, we haven’t managed to save up on a 4K monitor yet – but I think the card should be able to handle it too.

Video playback

For the next test, let’s head over to YouTube. We will connect the gigabit Internet with a twisted pair cable to avoid drawdowns due to the fault of network equipment. Then turn on the first video that comes across in 4K and activate full-screen mode. The video plays smoothly, without jerking or braking when switching from windowed to fullscreen – which is what you would expect.

Stress test in Furmark in a few seconds the device heats up to 80 degrees – the lack of active cooling affects. It was decided to stop the mockery of the card – I don’t want to risk the accelerator. A passive radiator is enough for everyday tasks, temperatures do not jump.

Gaming performance

To test what this card is capable of, let’s try to launch several old hits and, for the purity of the experiment, add a couple of new games. We note once again – the accelerator is clearly not a game one, and the ability to run anything at all on it is a nice bonus.

Let’s start with Battlefield 4 – shooter in 2013. With low quality graphics in Full HD, we get about 20 FPS – theoretically, you can play and even hit your opponents. Going down to HD in an attempt to get an acceptable frame rate – it worked! 35-45 FPS, even more indoors. But the graphics will satisfy only the most undemanding, nostalgic oldfags.

Next, let’s test the hit of the same year – Crysis 3… The game is clearly more demanding on the graphics accelerator than the previous one – at low Full HD 12-14 FPS – unplayable. Going down to HD, we get “console” 25-30 FPS with rare drawdowns.

Let’s take an even newer game – 2015, Fallout 4, minimum graphics settings. Unfortunately, we only managed to check it out fragmentarily. In Full HD, all the same 12-14 frames, and HD, although it “pleased” us with 20-25 FPS, but the game started somehow strange, having scaled only a part of the space visible in Full HD. And square textures are not very enjoyable.

This is where the ASUS GeForce GT 710 Silent LP managed to unfold to its fullest – so it is in Half-Life 2 and it is not surprising, because this hit (still popular among many) was released back in 2004. High graphics settings, Full HD – and frametime ranges from 60 to 100 frames per second, reaching 155 FPS indoors! Good news for Counter Strike fans – apparently, it will work out quite well. Trying the highest settings in 2K – about 50 shots are released indoors and 25-40 shots in City 17 station square.

After leaving the post-apocalyptic city, we plunge into the atmosphere of magic – we launch Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Princereleased in 2009. Obviously, the game is poorly ported from consoles – we have only 18 FPS and this is in HD, since Full HD is not provided here in principle. And when you turn off the recording of MSI Afterburner video under the insults of our fighting friend on a broomstick, we have 30 FPS and everything is quite smooth. And this is strange because in other tested games Afterburner causes a loss of a maximum of 1-3 frames – we checked.

Getting closer to the hardcore part of the review – Witcher 3… The lowest possible settings, optimistically turn on Full HD and … no, the miracle did not happen. Judging by what is happening on the screen, Geralt clearly drank witcher potions, only 8 frames per second. In HD, things are better, 14-17 FPS, but playing even for the sake of the plot is problematic.

And since such a booze has gone, we will finish off the accelerator with new products. Control, minimum graphics settings, don’t show off and turn on HD right away. 10 FPS in the opening cutscene, in the corridors of the Bureau it will be possible to run at 9-12 FPS.

And the final chord – Cyberpunk 2077… The game starts to glitch predictably already on the splash screen. In Full HD at low maximum 4 FPS, and this is indoors, and those NPC eyes in the elevator, hovering in the air! .. In HD, the situation is slightly better – 6-8 frames, but even moving is problematic. The card warmed up to 76 degrees. We stop the execution and move to conclusions.

Mining!

But before that, since we were told that the card is not LHR, it would be a sin not to try to earn a pretty penny on it! Let’s launch NiceHash Miner and see what this office baby can do in cryptocurrency mining.

But on the Devices page there is nothing else besides our processor – our card is obviously not supported. So, the miners are clearly not to blame for the increase in prices for this accelerator.

conclusions

All that the card has to do – namely, displaying images from office applications, the device does quite well. Of the undoubted advantages, we single out compact size, the presence of three different ports and the ability to work with three monitors at the same time.

In general, ASUS GeForce GT 710 Silent LP is clearly not a gamer’s choice and 2 gigabytes of GDDR5 will not help here. Although, as we have personally verified, it is quite possible to try to play some old hits. Well, those who wish to sit out can try, while having fun in Half-Life 2 in 2K.
