Attention. attackers take advantage of Zoom's popularity to spread malware

Between video conferencing platforms more in vogue at the moment there is Zoom. In these days when many lessons are held from home and many workers practice smart working, the service is registering a strong increase in users and consequently also cybercriminals have laid eyes on you. Zoom now has more than 12.9 million monthly active users, an increase of around 21% compared to the end of 2019.

According to what reported by Check Point Research, in the past weeks there has been one race to register domain names that include the term Zoom. Since the beginning of the year, more than 1700 have been registered 25% of these were registered last week. Researchers believe that 4% of these domains contain characteristics that they define as "suspicious". Among other things, Zoom is not the only goal, Google Classroom is also in the crosshairs, with domains that try to pass themselves off as the official one (classroom.google.com). Examples include "googloclassroom .com" and "googieclassroom .com" (we added it).

"We also took over malicious files with names like "zoom-us-zoom _ ##########. exe" and "microsoft-teams_V # mu # D _ ##########. exe" (# represents some numbers). Whoever downloads and starts these files installs InstallCore, a distribution software that could lead to the installation of additional malicious software. How to protect yourself so by threats that you can end up victim to, even if just for carelessness? THE advice they are always more or less the same in every situation of this kind:

  • Beware of emails and files received from unknown sendersespecially if they let you know of special offers or discounts.

  • Don't open unknown attachments or click on links within emails.

  • You do beware of domains, spelling mistakes in emails and websites and unknown senders of emails.

  • Make sure to order goods from authentic sources. One way to do it is that of not clicking on promotional links in emails. Search for the shop on Google and click the link from the Google results page.

  • If you have a business, have adequate security solutions and infrastructure.
