Bitkt futures trading launched on Bakkt platform

After several launch transfers on the platform for institutional investors, Bakkt just a few hours ago began trading bitcoin futures with physical delivery.

Cryptocurrency futures have long been launched on the Chicago CME, but they are calculated in monetary terms and this is their fundamental difference with the Bakkt product. In addition, not only monthly, but also daily contracts are available to platform clients – bitcoins will be transferred to the buyer’s account on the second business day after the contract is closed. That is, in fact, this is a form of asset purchase familiar to institutional investors.

“Day futures give the same freedom as a cash purchase, as well as the ability to play for a fall. It’s great. Let’s see if the derivatives market will follow the derivatives market or not. In theory, the derivatives market should dictate the prices of derivatives, but in practice we see the opposite situation for many products, ”said Lanre Sarumi, CEO of LevelTradingField, the operator of cryptocurrency exchanges.

Bakkt representatives expect significant interest in the product from institutional investors. As TradeBlock Research Director John Todaro noted, derivatives trading volumes typically exceed volumes in the derivatives market. However, he expects demand for Bakkt futures will be comparable to trading cryptocurrency futures on the CME exchange.

“The new offer, like CME futures trading, could change the attitude of regulators towards cryptocurrencies to a more positive one,” Todaro said.

Note that recently, trading volumes in both the derivatives and cryptocurrency futures markets have noticeably decreased. However, perhaps this is just the calm before the storm, because after the launch of Bakkt, the price of the first cryptocurrency can grow significantly.
