Candela C-Pod electric outboard motors are said to be unobtrusive units

Swedish company Candela has just unveiled its new idea to revolutionize electric propulsion for boats. Its new Candela C-Pod electric outboard motors are said to be so great that the manufacturer calls them the most efficient and durable ever.

Candela C-Pod outboards have received patents for a reason, because as an “engineering work of art” with an “almost unlimited service life”, they can change the propulsion of many ships. They owe their durability to electric motors, abandoning, among others, the need for an oil change or major maintenance, which translates into “years of maintenance free” for recreational use. They only need to be serviced every 3000 operating hours.

Weighing 50 kilograms, the C-Pod consists of two electric motors, each driving a counter-rotating propeller coupled together to provide a total power of 50 kW (67 hp). The use of two propellers positioned “one after the other” provided an increase in range to 14%, thanks to the fact that the latter, located behind the first, is not tormented by a 30% decrease in power transmission to the propulsion due to water resistance, but only 10%.

Candela also managed to keep the noise level low even for an electric motor and solved the problem of engine cooling. The C-Pod is not only long, but also completely underwater, which cools the electrical components to a better degree. Prices remain unknown at the moment.
