CES 2020: everything we expect to see in the largest technological event in the world

Update: now we know the date and time of the CES 2020 keynote. You can find them below, in each individual section dedicated to individual companies.

It is no longer called by its full name “Consumer Electronics Show”, but the CES it's still the place to see the latest technologies that the biggest companies have to offer, whether it's a 5G phone, a transparent Ultra-HD TV, a personal drone to flutter around or something strange, like for example a robot dog.

This year's show – CES 2020 – it will not be very different from that of past editions, but the current version will focus more on travel and tourism, data analysis and improvement of the customer experience. There will still be dozens of new televisions, speakers, headphones, laptops and phones, many of which will be optimized for the 5G / 8K revolution.

After addressing the repercussions of last year for the exclusion from the award ceremony of a sex toy company, the CES 2020 will experimentally expand the field of application of the Health and Wellness sector also to sex toys in collaboration with The Female Quotient.

There will also be conferences on digital health and the commodification of personal data. The CES will however offer something new and interesting for all kinds of technology enthusiasts: for those who are devoted to the business sector, for those who are fixated on future trends or for those who are simply curious about the latest technologies.

Without dwelling further, here's all there is of interest on the show, including important dates, how to buy tickets and our forecasts for some of the gadgets that we will most likely see inside the Las Vegas Convention Center.

When will CES 2020 be?

According to official dates, the CES 2020 goes from Tuesday 7 January to Friday 10 January 2020.

However, journalists are likely to arrive in the city a few days earlier to provide media coverage for the press conferences that will open Sunday 5 January at 12:00 PST and will continue on Monday and Tuesday. It is in that period that we will listen to the presentations of Sony, Samsung, LG and many other electronics manufacturers who will show their products on stage.

Traditionally, the largest number of keynotes occurs on Monday, when LG, Samsung and Sony organize all their presentations, but we will start hearing about CES starting on Sunday evening, when news will start to leak from the conference.

How can I buy tickets for CES 2020?

Registration for CES 2020 is now available on CES 2020 website. Tickets purchased well in advance are available for only $ 100, if you simply want to access the showroom from January 7th to 10th and presentations, even if that price will go up to $ 300 starting December 18th 2019.

If you wish to see more events than the base pass, you can purchase the “CES 2020 Starter Conference Pass” which includes a list of selected events around the main trends of the show for $ 700 or the “Deluxe Conference Pass” which includes over 14 sessions partner for $ 1,400.

How big is the ESC and where does it take place?

CES is huge and occupies the vast majority of the Las Vegas Strip and surrounding streets. In fact, in terms of square footage, there are over 250,000 net square meters of exhibition space between the Las Vegas Convention Center, The Sands, Mandalay Bay and The Venetian, which mostly host the convention and its exhibitors.

Trivia: there are around 160,000 hotel rooms in Las Vegas and around 180,000 attendees each year. As hotels are expected to fill up quickly and the streets leading to the convention center will become quite crowded during the week of the show, CTA (the company that stages the show) offers free shuttles to almost every major hotel on the Strip, from and to the Convention Center, and it has buses that come and go from the area of The Sands between 9:00 and 18:00.

In any case, there is a lot to walk. The convention center itself is huge and so is The Sands. Walking can easily take between one and two hours a day, and you can easily walk from 5 to 6 km following the route.

Which companies will participate in CES 2020?

There will be practically all the major technology companies, except Apple. (There is a complete list on the CES 2020 website).

Confirmed exhibitors include Amazon, Canon, Facebook, Intel, LG, Lenovo, Microsoft, MSI, Nikon, Samsung, Sony and many, many more.

Not everyone is there to show off new products, since a good majority of companies are only there to create new businesses, while others attend to gather feedback and show themselves in public. But there will still be hundreds of technological innovations, which will make their debut this year, in almost all categories.

CES 2020 trends and forecasts

In a meeting with TechRadar, CTA outlined a series of trends that would have been the focus of this year's event. The list included transportation and tourism (Delta Airlines has a keynote this year for the first time in the show's history), data analysis and privacy, digital health, global 5G race, consumerization of AI and, of course, displays from 8K.

These are rather serious and multifaceted topics and, although they are extremely important, they are not the only kind of thing to see in the showroom.

If you want to receive news on important products, you will find them coming from the companies that we list below, roughly the same as last year.

AMD at CES 2020

We expect AMD to put one on the market new GPU line high-end next year, possibly as early as CES 2020. AMD has taken the stage on Monday to hold a keynote and potentially could do the same this year. AMD showed its first 7-nanometer GPU, the Radeon VII, at CES 2019, so let's expect great things this year.

LG at CES 2020

Like Samsung, LG's plans are easy to predict: it will likely showcase one new OLED TV seriesas well as providing an updated release date for the model OLED rollable of last year. Speaking of televisions that we can't afford, CES 2020 will probably be the place where LG officially debuts its transparent OLED prototype that showed behind closed doors at last year's show … although it will probably only be for businesses initially.

LG also uses CES for its debut new line of appliances, including smart washing machines and dryers, and elegant home gadgets like air purifiers and robot vacuum cleaners. Last year we saw a system for domestic and beer production an intelligent wardrobe capable of ironing clothes (and not only). Equipped with a mirror door with integrated display, mobile hooks and an intelligent steam cooking system, it was a decidedly different product from what we expected to see at a technology fair.

CES is also the time when LG shows its mid-range smartphones. Last year we saw the LG V40 ThinQ, while in 2017 LG brought the Stylus 3. Don't expect flagship phones at this year's event, but fans of Android phones may see something of interest to them.

Nvidia at CES 2020

After half a dozen indiscretions, the next Nvidia Shield it will almost certainly be presented at CES this year. We don't have confirmed information at the moment, but we suspect that the new micro-console will be able to connect to Stadia, Google's next game streaming service, and potentially have Apple TV support.

Last year Nvidia presented its GeForce RTX Mobility graphics cards at CES 2019, along with RTX 2080 and other gaming laptop cards. Will CES 2020 bring similar products? We just have to wait to find out.

Samsung at CES 2020

CES is always a great show for Samsung. It is the place chosen by the company to distribute its latest QLED televisions, conceptual screens and monstrous personalized installations. Last year, the company debuted with a new 219-inch TV called The Wall and took a look at the latest update to its Tizen operating system which included Apple TV. This year, there will be new televisions QLED with zero frame, an item that was recently confirmed by a patent filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

On the computing side, Samsung debuted with Flash notebook is Notebook 9 Pro, and could offer updates this year. The South Korean company, as far as we know, does not seem willing to bring its notebooks to Italy. Too bad, but maybe things will change during 2020.

Samsung will also offer updates in other categories: monitors and solid-state units, so know that there are also those, among other things proposed by the South Korean company.

Sony at CES 2020

Sony didn't have many new products to show last year, but it has brought its new series TV Master Series Z9G on the show and debuted with his new one 360 Reality Audio format. We will probably see more of the latter this year and some new televisions in the 950, 850, Z and A-Series series as well as some new 2.1 soundbars with Dolby Atmos.

Outside of the AV space, Sony is likely to spread some news on SS5 before its official debut and will talk about its gaming peripherals like PlayStation VR. A full debut of the new console seems unlikely, especially considering the past that Sony consoles have with the CES, but we would not be surprised if at least it was mentioned during the Monday evening keynote by Sony.
