Compare GTX 1660 Super vs RX 5700 XT

Should you upgrade from GTX 1660 Super to RX 5700 XT? Let’s compare two video cards in games.

We will test Ryzen 7 2700x vs Ryzen 5 3600x in 6 popular games, from different developers with different game optimizations for hardware:

1. Battlefield V (2018) by DICE
2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015) from CD Project RED
3. Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018) от Nixxes Software и Crystal Dynamics
4. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018) by Ubisoft Quebec
5. Hitman 2 (2018) от IO Interactive
6. Metro Exodus (2019) by 4A Games

Graphics settings are maximum. FULL HD resolution, 1920 × 1080.

Also keep in mind that when recording Radeon Relive or ShadowPlay, about 3-5 frames are lost.

Test bench configuration

• CPU: Intel Core I7 4770K, 4 cores, 8 threads 4.4GHz (OC).
• Motherboard: Asus Z87-PRO.
• Video card: Sapphire RX 5700 XT NITRO+.
• Video card2: Gigabyte GTX 1660 Super.
• RAM: DDR3 Corsair Vengeance 4x4Gb Dual 2133MHz (OC).
• SSD: Transcend SSD MTE220S 256GB NAND (Win. 10).
• HDD: Western Digital Blue 1TB 7200RPM / 64MB Cache. For games.
• Power Supply: be quiet! System Power 750W.
• Video driver: Adrenalin 20.2.2 (26.02.2020) / Nvidia 445.87
• Gameplay recording: AMD Relive / ShadowPlay

For tests we overclocked the I7 4770K, you can check the overclocking on our website. This is a detailed manual and video instruction for overclocking. But even in overclocking, the I7 4770K limited the RX 5700 XT, on a more powerful processor, the result of the gap between the RX 5700 XT and the GTX 1660 Super would be greater.

Battlefield V (2018)

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 61 fps
• AVG — 119 fps

GTX 1660 Super:

• 1% Low — 69 fps
• AVG — 90 fps

The difference in the minimum FPS 1% Low is 13.11% in favor of the RX 5700 XT, and the difference in average FPS is 32.22%.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 83 fps
• AVG — 121 fps

GTX 1660 Super:

• 1% Low — 45 fps
• AVG — 80 fps

In The Witcher 3, the difference in the minimum FPS 1% Low is 84.44% in favor of the RX 5700 XT, as well as the average FPS of 50.25%. The results for the RX 5700 XT are impressive. In this case, the card was limited by the processor.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018)

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 86 fps
• AVG — 115 fps

GTX 1660 Super:

• 1% Low — 87 fps
• AVG — 100 fps

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the difference is 1% Low 1.16% in favor of the GTX 1660 Super, and the average FPS is higher by 15.06% in favor of the RX 5700 XT. In this game, the difference between the cards is negligible. The reason for this is the processor.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (2018)

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 43 fps
• AVG — 54 fps

GTX 1660 Super:

• 1% Low — 46 fps
• AVG — 73 fps

Radeon cards are constantly experiencing problems with this game. The GTX 1660 Super outperformed the RX 5700 XT by 6.97% in minimum FPS and 35.18% in average. The gap is very large, and this is not about the processor, but about the optimization of the game.

Hitman 2 (2018)

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 54 fps
• AVG — 90 fps

GTX 1660 Super:

• 1% Low — 41 fps
• AVG — 67 fps

In Hitman 2, the RX 5700 XT outperformed the GTX 1660 Super by 31.70% in minimum FPS and 34.32% in average FPS. In this case, the stop is back in the processor. With a more powerful processor, the difference would be greater.

Metro Exodus 2 (2018)

RX 5700 XT:

• 1% Low — 45 fps
• AVG — 61 fps

GTX 1660 Super:

• 1% Low — 33 fps
• AVG — 44 fps

In Metro Exodus, the picture is similar to Hitman2. The RX 5700 XT has a 40.62% lead in minimum FPS and 38.63% in average FPS. But like Hitman2, the RX 5700 XT was processor-limited.

conclusions

The real difference between RX 5700 XT vs GTX 1660 Super is 40-50%. The price difference is about the same. So if you would like to do a system upgrade, the RX 5700 XT is fine for that. Productivity will increase by at least 40%.
