Deficit of AMD and Nvidia video cards until February 2021

The fault is the global shortage of GDDR6 memory.

The global GDDR6 memory shortage is rumored to be affecting the supply issues that have long held back AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 and Nvidia RTX 3000 Series popularity.

The information comes according to a report from the French edition of Cowcotland, which claims that AMD and Nvidia are faced with a limited supply of GDDR6 and that the shortage is likely to remain a problem until early next year.

This means that the availability of modern AMD and Nvidia graphics cards will not improve until February 2021. Even so, it will take several months for the supply chain to catch up with demand as well as generate a surplus, the report notes.

It’s worth noting that only the Nvidia RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti use GDDR6 memory, while the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 run on GDDR6X memory and are said to be less prone to shortages. Nevertheless, so far all forecasts indicate that the situation with the lack of other Ampere graphics cards will continue in 2021.

It is also possible that the supply of video cards may be interrupted later due to the global spread or vaccination against COVID-19.

Speaking at Credit Suisse’s 24th annual tech conference, Nvidia’s CFO, Colette Kress, acknowledged that the company continues to experience supply challenges.

“We do have supply constraints, and those constraints go beyond the lack of boards and silicon, that’s right, some of the constraints are related to the components,” she said. “Throughout the quarter, we continue to work on supply and believe that demand is likely to exceed supply in Q4.”

And while Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards are also in short supply, AMD has yet to make a public announcement on the duration of the supply cap.

Despite continuing delays, AMD and Nvidia are expected to announce more GPUs at the CES virtual conference in January. The former is likely to showcase a Navi 22 based Radeon RX 6700, while the latter is expected to showcase the stock Nvidia RTX 3060.
