Geforce GTX 880 and GTX 870 with Maxwell arrive in the autumn

There was no transition to 20 nanometers when Nvidia launched the first graphics cards with the Maxwell architecture, which probably explains why the Geforce GTX 750 and 750 Ti were placed in the existing 700 series. In the autumn, on the other hand, there will be a change in the bit when Maxwell finds the highest performance classes.

Sources from partner manufacturers now tell SweClockers that Nvidia recently informed that the launch of Geforce GTX 880 and GTX 870 will take place in the fourth quarter of the year, probably in October or November. The upcoming graphics cards thus mark the start of the 800 series for desktops.

Despite the new model series, 28 nanometer technologies still apply. Although the semiconductor manufacturer TSMC is in production at 20 nanometers, this does not appear to apply to the type of high-performance circuits used for graphics processors. Instead, the manufacturing leap will be delayed until sometime next year.

Although the network is overflowing with speculation, no more detailed details are known. The Geforce GTX 880 and GTX 870 are believed to be based on the new graphics processor GM204, the successor to today’s GK104. The circuit is said to be the “second generation” Maxwell and is thus suggested to contain more news than higher performance.
