Geforce GTX 980 and 970 on entry in September

That Nvidia has new graphics cards up its sleeve is hardly a well-kept secret. Next in line is the GM204 graphics processor, which takes the Maxwell architecture to the higher performance classes. However, the new models will not house either the existing 700 series or an intended 800 series. Instead, Nvidia chooses to go up another figure.

According to Videocardz, the GM204-based newcomers will confusingly be named the Geforce GTX 980 and 970. The explanation is stated to be that Nvidia has decided that the next generation of graphics processors for both laptops and desktops will coexist within the same series of numbers. At present, the Geforce 800 series contains only laptop circuits.

The launch of the new Geforce 900 series will take place on September 9-10, according to a live press conference in San Francisco. First out is the Geforce GTX 980 and 970, which will be on the market just over a week later. In practice, these replace today’s Geforce GTX 780 Ti and 780.

In connection with this, the GM204 for laptops in the form of the Geforce 900M series is also introduced. After that, the spotlight will be on the scaled-down Geforce GTX 960, which will be introduced in October.
