GeForce GTX 980 Ti: Overview | Specification (Specs)| Testing – Is it Good for Gaming? – After the release in September 2014 of the next flagship model GeForce GTX 980, the computer world had no doubts that the 980th “titanium” model would soon be born. But only a little over eight months later, the “greens” introduced their new video card NVIDIA GeForce 980 You. Note that AMD has nothing to oppose to the new product that has appeared at the time of its release.

Those who follow the emergence of new graphics adapters from NVIDIA know that shortly before the announcement of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti, the manufacturer released the world’s most powerful single-chip video card for the summer of 2015 – the GeForce GTX TITAN X. This model is based on a graphics core marked GM200 , built on NVIDIA’s latest Maxwell microarchitecture. And the new model GeForce 980 Ti is, in fact, a slightly “cut down” version of TITAN X. Naturally, as a result of this, the price of the new product is also “cut down”. However, here we see an interesting picture – the final performance of the 980 Ti is not much lower than that of the TITAN X, but the price has been reduced quite significantly. But first things first.

The appearance of the reference sample is practically no different from TITAN X, except for the color of the casing. The 980 Ti is light.

As for the cooling system, everything here is also familiar to us – a closed cooler and a radiator with an evaporation chamber. We met this constructive solution in the top models of the 700 series.

The new model has three DisplayPort connectors and one each for HDMI and Dual-Link DVI-I. The graphics card supports all current NVIDIA technologies – SLI®, G-Sync™, GameStream™, ShadowPlay™, 2.0 GPU Boost™, Super Resolution Technology, GameWorks™, OpenGL 4.5. Microsoft DirectX 12 API is also supported, with a subsequent upgrade to 12.1.

Now let’s look at the technical characteristics of the last three flagships from NVIDIA.

So, when comparing the novelty with TITAN X, we see only a decrease in texture units, the number of CUDA cores and the amount of video memory. The test results show that this “cutoff” did not affect the performance of the GTX 980 Ti that much. So, when tested in 3DMark 11, the new video card scores 22070 points. For comparison, the GTX TITAN X scores 22980 and the GTX 980 scores 17980.

Now let’s give the results of testing in popular demanding games on the average number of FPSquestion_mark. The maximum quality of graphics was set with a resolution of 2560×1440 px.

Let’s summarize. The GeForce GTX 980 Ti is definitely the perfect solution for PC gaming at FullHD and WQHD resolutions. The difference in performance between the last two flagships is so small that their difference in price is, to put it mildly, surprising. At the start of sales, the Titan X was valued by the manufacturer at $999, while the 980 Ti at $649. In Russia, as of June 2015, the average price in online stores for TITAN X is 69,000 rubles, and for GTX 980 Ti – 43,000 rubles.

Someone may have a question – what to choose? Ours, so to speak, IMHO will be the following. If you need a graphics card for games with FullHD and WQHD resolution, then the choice in favor of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti is very obvious in our opinion. It is more than enough for the most demanding modern games, and the price in this case looks much more attractive. Although, perhaps someone is ready to overpay three and a half hundred dollars for a few FPS and become the owner of the most powerful video card in the world in the face of the GeForce GTX TITAN X. The final choice is always yours.
