Resizable BAR, support is coming on GeForce RTX 3000: what to do

The Steam Hardware & Software survey it is not the Bible to fully understand the most popular configurations among gamers, as it is optional, but it is still a starting point to understand a little bit how buying trends move. At the beginning of April we saw the entry of the RTX 3070 in the ranking, with the greatest growth compared to all the other solutions, while at the end of April it is the GeForce RTX 3060 to steal the show with an entry in the ranking marked by a + 0.17%. Ironically, the same percentage scored last month by the RTX 3070.

The fastest growing card ever between late March and April is the GeForce GTX 1650 with 0.22%, then here is the RTX 3060 (+ 0.17%), the GeForce MX230 mobile GPU (0.15%) and the GeForce GTX 1650 Ti (+ 0.13%). The interesting aspect is that while all Nvidia Ampere cards are in the chart, there is still no RX 6000 solution from AMD.

On the one hand it is evident that the shortage has hit AMD harder than Nvidia, with the former manufacturing at TSMC at 7 nanometers and the latter by Samsung at 8 nanometers. The problem of AMD is relying on TSMC and 7 nanometers to make Ryzen, EPYC and Threadripper CPUs and chips at the heart of the PS5 and Xbox Series X | S consoles as well.

Under the agreements with Microsoft and Sony, AMD has to allocate a large number of chips to the new consoles, so the blanket is necessarily shorter for the production of its chips. And since so far the Ryzen and EPYC CPUs have had more luck on the market than the Radeons, the new RX 6000 are nowhere to be found.

It must be said that the company, exposing the latest quarterly data, has declared to have sales of RDNA 2 GPUs doubled, reaching low figures. CEO Lisa Su has promised that GPU production will increase in the coming months, so we’ll see. It is not excluded that the buyers of the RX 6000 GPUs have decided not to share data on their configurations, on the other hand it is optional, but it would be ridiculous to think that AMD users are more shy than Nvidia ones. More likely than the RX 6000 (RX 6700 XT, 6800, 6800 XT and 6900 XT) do not reach a minimum quota to enter the ranking: in the current ranking the minimum value is 0.15%.

This is also why if we turn to the CPUs, we see how AMD’s share has been steadily rising for months: between March and April it rose by 0.51% at 29,48%, while in December it was 25%. That’s as far as Windows is concerned, because on the Linux user front, AMD has even better numbers: its CPUs have grown by 0.78% to 36.27%.
