Geforce RTX 3080 for portable gets 6,144 CUDA cores

Over Christmas and New Year, the leaks have hailed closely ahead of the upcoming CES trade fair and the launches that are expected to take place during it. One of these expected launches is Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 3000 series for portable use, where we previously reported that the 3070 variant will have performance similar to a stationary RTX 2080 while being equipped with 5,120 CUDA cores.

Now the portable RTX 3070 is joined in the Geekbench database by big brother RTX 3080. The result was seen according to the tradition of eagle eyes TUM_APISAK, and in addition to OpenCL performance in class with stationary RTX 3070 also reveals specifications around the circuit itself. The number of calculation units is namely 48 in number with 128 CUDA cores each, which results in 6,144 CUDA cores.

In addition to being equipped with a larger amount of CUDA cores than the stationary RTX 3070 and its 5,888 pieces, the circuit is also paired with 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, a configuration the mobile RTX 3080 is believed to be alone in Nvidia’s lineup. In terms of performance, Videocardz reports that the circuit still has relatively low clock frequencies of 1.54 GHz, giving just stationary RTX 3070 on the nut with 139,181 points compared to stationary Geforce RTX 3070 and its 137,143.

The portable variant of the Geforce RTX 3080 is expected to be powered by a circuit codenamed GA104-775, the most core variant of the GA104 graphics processor ever discovered. Like previous generations, Nvidia also leaves generous room for manufacturers to configure the circuit in both Max-Q and Max-P editions, where a couple of parameters may indicate that the circuit in question is a more energy-efficient Max-Q variant.

The result is namely set with an Asus computer of the model ROG Zephyrus, a thinner model of laptop game computer that has traditionally used Nvidia circuits of Max-Q type. In addition, Nvidia is expected to allow maximum frequencies for the Geforce RTX 3080 up to 1.7 GHz, frequencies that are most likely to be achieved only by circuits cast according to the Max-P concept.

The mobile circuits in the Geforce RTX 3000 series are expected to be launched during this year’s CES trade fair, more specifically during Nvidia’s event Game On on 12 January.
