GeForce RTX 4080, new graphics from NVIDIA show the performance

While the echo of reviews of the new GeForce RTX 4090 still echoes, a very powerful but also very expensive video card, enthusiasts looking to high performance are already wondering about the potential qualities of the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GB and 16 GB, solutions coming out in November.

To the rescue comes none other than NVIDIA, with three graphs illustrating the performance of cards in Microsoft Flight Simulator, F1 22, and A Plague Tale: Requiem at 4K resolution and maximum settings. In this way we can get a more concrete idea of the new 4080s before the debut.

According to NVIDIA, in Flight Simulator the RTX 4080 in 12 GB version will score less fps than an RTX 3090 Ti in native 4K rendering (-1.3%), while the 16 GB model a dozen fps more (+ 24.3%). It should be emphasized that between the two RTX 4080s there is a gap of about 26%.

However, thanks to DLSS 3, the newcomers will be able to exceed the top of the range of the 3000 series with DLSS 2 in a significant way: the 12 GB RTX 4080 will outperform the 3090 Ti by 60%, the 16 GB RTX 4080 by approximately 94%.

Turning to “A Plague Tale: Requiem“, in native 4K rendering the 12 GB RTX 4080 loses 16% of the performance compared to the 3090 Ti, while the 16GB 4080 is ahead of 9%. With the DLSS 3, again, the 4080 12 GB is ahead of the 3090 Ti with DLSS 2 by 16%, while the 4080 16 GB is ahead of the 41%. Between the two 4080s the gap is 30%.

In F1 22 the scenario sees the RTX 4080 12 GB lose by 6% compared to the 3090 Ti in native 4K rendering, while the 16GB 4080 is ahead of 16%. By activating the DLSS 3 the newcomers detach the top of the range of the 3000 series by 14 and 44% respectively. The two Ada Lovelace cards are split between them by 24%.

Native 4K rendering performance may be an issue for NVIDIA in pushing the new RTX 4080. This at least initially, when the DLSS 3 will not be so widespread (here a first list of titles) and the GeForce RTX 3090 will still crowd the market at advantageous prices.

In fact, it should not be forgotten that the starting prices are 1109 and 1479 euros including VAT respectively for the 4080 12 GB and the 4080 16 GB. Obviously this is a first opinion looking at the graphs in an aseptic way. We will draw conclusions when testing the new RTX 4080s.

Recall the specifications of the new cards: the RTX 4080 16 GB provides an AD103 GPU with 9728 CUDA core and 16 GB of GDDR6X memory at 22.4 Gbps on a 256-bit bus, for a bandwidth of 716.8 GB / s. The TGP indicated by NVIDIA is 320W (like the 3080 10GB).

The other GeForce RTX 4080, the 12 GB one, is based on an AD104 GPU with 7680 CUDA core and 12 GB of GDDR6X memory at 21 Gbps, with a 192-bit bus that brings the bandwidth to 504 GB / s. As for the TGP, the value indicated by NVIDIA is 285W.
