Gigabyte and Palit introduce Geforce GTX 1060 with GDDR5X memory

A couple of weeks ago, Nvidia updated the product page for its popular graphics card Geforce GTX 1060, where the news was a variant with the faster memory type GDDR5X. The new variant was seen by many as a direct response to AMD’s infamous mid-range model Radeon RX 590, with the goal that a higher memory bandwidth would even out the performance differences between the cards.

Now the first cards according to the new concept are starting to appear from Nvidia’s partner manufacturers, and Gigabyte and Zotac are initially visible in the starting pits. For the former company, it is about the model Geforce GTX 1060 G1 Gaming D5X 6G, but in terms of specifications, there is not much to say about the model other than that it is equipped with 6 GB of GDDR5X memory.

The more details are available about the Palits Geforce GTX 1060 Gamingpro OC +, as the company lists in principle all specifications for the card. These are, as usual, 1,280 CUDA cores, where the base and turbo frequencies of the graphics circuit are slightly increased compared to the reference at 1,531 MHz and 1,746 MHz, respectively.

Something that really stands out, however, is the memory frequency which, despite the step up to GDDR5X memory, is at a frugal 8,800 MHz. This gives the card a memory bandwidth of 211 GB / s – a relatively marginal step up from the usual Geforce GTX 1060 whose memory frequency of 8,000 MHz results in a bandwidth of 192 GB / s.

The memory bandwidth is also lower than last year’s special versions of the Geforce GTX 1060, where Nvidia sanctioned the partner manufacturers to overclock the cards’ GDDR5 memories to 9,000 MHz. At the time of testing, the higher memory bandwidth of those cards provided a performance advantage of about 4 percent, and therefore these new variants should land a little below those levels.

Geforce GTX 1060 with GDDR5X memory is expected to land in stores in November. At the time of writing, the price levels are unknown.
