Gogoro showed the first replaceable semiconductor batteries

Semiconductor batteries can change the realities of electric motoring for good. Companies are still working on this topic, and in recent days the world has received the first replaceable solid state batteries from Gogoro.

Replaceable semiconductor batteries from Gogoro

Gogoro is mainly a brand that produces scooters, but has recently partnered with ProLogium Technology to present the world’s first replaceable semiconductor battery for electric vehicles. Unfortunately, it still takes the form of a prototype, but it’s not a show-off prototype, as both companies expect to present a “commercial offer” at an unspecified point in the future.

In practice, the battery takes the form of a lithium-ceramic cell set and is fully compatible with current Gogoro scooters. It currently provides 1.7 kWh of capacity, but is ultimately targeting 2.5 kWh. It is worth recalling here that semiconductor cells work similarly to lithium-ion cells, because they contain a cathode and anode separated (which is crucial) by a solid, not liquid electrolyte. Benefits? Much higher energy density, no need for cooling and additional control elements, higher safety and limiting the degradation of the cell’s capacity with subsequent charging cycles.
