Google Chrome 96 is out now: here’s what’s new

Google released Chrome 96 for all supported desktop operating systems and Android this week; the new version is 96.0.4664.45. No security updates mentioned at launch.

Chrome 96

Google plans to roll out the update to all devices running Chrome in the coming weeks. Desktop users can speed up the process by loading chrome: // settings / help in the browser’s address bar. The page that opens displays the currently installed version and runs a search for updates. The new version will be picked up and installed automatically. A reboot is required to complete the process.

The official blog post on the Chrome Versions blog offers virtually no version information. It lists the version number and that the extended stable version of Chrome has also been promoted to Chrome 96. Google recently switched to a 4 week release cycle for Chrome and created the extended channel to increase the release period to any other release ( 8 weeks).

A beta version of Chrome 96 post on the Chromium blog reveals information about what’s new in the new version. Here is a list of important changes:

  • HTTPS is used to connect to websites if an HTTPS record is available in the Domain Name Service (DNS).
  • Web applications can register as URL protocol handlers, for example, to initiate Twitter links using Twitter PWA, or FTP links using a web FTP application.
  • New Origin test: conditional approach
    • Applications that capture other windows or tabs currently have no way of controlling whether the calling item or the captured item gets focus. (Think of a presentation feature in a video conferencing app.) Chrome 96 makes this possible with a subclass of MediaStreamTrack called FocusableMediaStreamTrack, which supports a new focus () method.
  • New Origin Test: Priority Suggestions
    • Priority Hints introduces a “importance” attribute set by the developer to influence the calculated priority of a resource. The supported importance values are “automatic”, “low” and “high”. Priority hints indicate the relative importance of a resource to the browser, allowing greater control over the order in which resources are loaded.
  • Back the cache on the desktop for faster navigation to “previously visited pages after cross-site navigation.”
  • New policy without credentials for Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy.
    • Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy has a new no-credential option that causes cross-origin non-cors requests to skip credentials (cookies, client certificates, etc.). Similar to COEP: require-corp, you can enable cross-origin isolation.
  • Unique IDs for desktop PWA.
    • The appmanifest specification does not explicitly define what uniquely identifies a PWA. Currently, on the desktop versions of Chromium and Firefox-based browsers on Android, PWAs are uniquely identified by the start_url application and Android Chromium-based browsers use manifest_url instead. This confuses developers. It also made developers unable to change their start_url and manifest_url. Having stable identification allows applications to update other metadata such as start_url and manifest_url, and to have a consistent way of referring to applications across browser platforms, PWA stores, and other external entities. release process for the desktop-side deployment, as the Android deployment will be done with a different timeline. They will both follow the same specification.
  • Enhanced content security policy to improve interoperability with WebAssembly.
  • Deprecated – The PaymentRequest API has deprecated the basic card payment method. It will be removed in Chrome 100.

Google is also running a test to find out if the release of Chrome version 100 will cause any problems on the internet. Site owners and users can test this by enabling the chrome: // flags / # force-major-version-to-100 flag.

Now you: Do you use Google Chrome? Have you already updated it?
