Recently, Google Drive is undergoing a major “renovation”. One of the novelties introduced in the service is offline access to files.

Google is constantly working on improving its services, and working with their applications is becoming more and more convenient. However, the problem arises when we lose connection to the network and need to get to the file saved in the cloud. As long as it is a file created by Google – no problem, but what about other, e.g. .pdf or .doc text documents? Unfortunately, we only had access to these online.

Since 2019, Google has been working on the offline viewing feature in the Drive beta channel. As we learn from the Workspace Updates blog post, this feature is rolling out to a stable version of the service so that everyone will be able to take advantage of it, although it will probably take some time before it is rolled out to everyone.

Google points out that if Drive is offline, we may open files outside of Google using applications installed on the device. This should also be considered when configuring files for offline access. We ourselves have to mark them with the appropriate attribute, so that we can open them without being connected to the network.
