HDMI LA Allows Manufacturers to Release Fake HDMI 2.1 Monitors

Cable HDMI 2.1

If you are looking for a monitor with connectivity HDMI 2.1Be careful, since the HDMI License Manager itself (HDMI LA) does not look badly at manufacturers launching HDMI 2.1 cataloged monitors when it really is misleading advertising and they use HDMI 2.0.

The first of the monitors to fall for this scam is a 24.5-inch Xiaomi with a refresh rate of 240 Hz that for now is only for sale in China. Although the company does not announce with fanfare the HDMI 2.1 connectivity, in the specifications section, in video inputs, it is indicated that it integrates 2x HDMI 2.1 ports *, and here comes into play the asterisk, where it is indicated that it only supports the TMDS signal protocol, linked to HDMI 2.0, and not the FRL (Fixed Rate Link) of HDMI 2.1, necessary to achieve higher refresh rates or resolution, in addition to not supporting such an important technology for players such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR).

HDMI 2.0 vs HDMI 2.1 Specs

TFT Central contacted the HDMI License Manager to explain how that use of HDMI 2.1 specifications is allowed. It turns out that the body claims that the HDMI 2.0 standard no longer exists and that manufacturers should refer to HDMI 2.1 instead, but also list which features are supported.

In other words, now all monitors can be labeled as HDMI 2.1, and it is up to the user to know if it really offers the capabilities expected from this port or they are really fooling them by accessing an HDMI 2.0 monitor.

1) HDMI 2.0 is no more, and devices should not claim v2.0 compliance as it is not referenced

2) HDMI 2.0 features are now a subset of 2.1

3) All new capabilities and features associated with HDMI 2.1 are optional (this includes FRL, higher bandwidths, VRR, ALLM, and everything else)

4) If a device claims to be compatible with version 2.1, it should also list the features it supports so there is no confusion.

This is a summary of the statement made by the HDMI license manager to TFT Central.
