Global warming is contributing to the melting of glaciers, which in turn translates into rising sea and ocean levels. It does not seem that humanity will be able to fully stop this process, which is why many coastal towns may find themselves under water in the next few decades. Given this vision, Jun Kamei created human gills.
A student of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in London, she designed a device that can help people function in the environment shown in the famous film with Kevin Costner entitled Water World. To do this, Kamei began observing oxygen-breathing insects that are also able to survive underwater. For this purpose, they used an air tank located under their skeleton. Following the example of this solution used by nature, the student 3D printed an outfit capable of capturing oxygen and dispersing carbon dioxide underwater.
The garment consists of three parts: the gills attached around the chest; a mask put on the face and a tube connecting both elements. Amphibio, as the design is called, has a wrinkled structure, which is used to enlarge the surface of the outfit. In this way, it allows more oxygen to flow through.
A person burns about 500 liters of oxygen a day. To get it, we need to filter eleven thousand liters of air. The problem is that there is much less O under the water2. It contains approx. 10 milliliters of oxygen per liter =, which means that with 100% efficiency, you would need to filter some 50,000 liters of H2About to meet human oxygen demand. Kamei is aware of this and admits that in its current form, the prototype is not able to get enough oxygen. For this to happen, the designer would have to significantly increase the surface area of Amhpibio. This, in turn, will translate into huge dimensions.
And while the gills in its current form do not seem to actually allow humans to survive underwater, the project is definitely worth attention. Perhaps it will become an inspiration for new designers who will come up with even more effective solutions?
