How to change the toner of a laser printer for a new one

Unlike inkjet printers, laser printers use toners instead of ink cartridges. Inside the toner there is actually no ink, but a powder it contains different substances like thermoplastic resins and iron oxide. However, changing the toner is almost as easy as changing the ink cartridges, since the method only consists of remove one and put another. Let's see it.

How to change the printer toner

The first step you should do is prepare the new toner that you must have previously purchased, specific to your printer model. Take it out of its packaging carefully, and remove all seals.

Remove the seals from the new toner

The vast majority of printer toners, even non-original ones, have plastic seals that must be removed before installation, and are usually garish in color to attract attention (for example, if the toner is black, they are usually oranges to make it stand out). In addition, they usually have ring shape so that we know that it is enough to put the finger and to throw.

In the image above you can see that these compatible toners have two seals: one below, with an orange plate, and another on the sensor, also orange and shaped like a ring. Pull gently but fearlessly to remove them.

Take out the old toner

Once we have the new toner ready, we must remove the old and worn (we speak in the singular, but the process is the same for all the toner that your printer has. If it is only in black and white there will be a single toner, but if it is color will have four in total, black, red, yellow and blue).

It does not matter if the printer is turned off or on in this step.

For this, the first thing you must do is open the toner compartment the printer. The way to do this depends on the brand and model, but is usually done simply by opening a lid, which can be simply opened pulling it or pressing a button that releases it. As soon as it is done we should see the toner, which has a kind of handle to pull it.

Change laser printer toner

In most home printers, simply by pulling the toner we can remove it, but there are some more advanced models (especially in multifunction printers) that toner is caught in the fuser. In this case, you will see that there is a eyelash, generally blue or light green, that we will have to activate so that only the toner comes out and not the toner but the fuser.

You can see this tab in the image below, located on the left side of the toner.

Once we take out the old toner, the ideal is to take advantage of the new packaging to store it inside. Do it carefully so that it does not release dust, or that it releases as little dust as possible. It is not toxic, but better to prevent than to cure, and also thus avoid having to clean up afterwards.

You should take this old toner and its packaging to a clean point for treatment and recycling. Don't throw it in the conventional trash.

Replace the toner with the new one

Now that we have the old toner out of the printer and the new one ready, we just have to insert it in the same position that the old one was in. Note that all printers have rails on the sides where the toner is installed, and the toner has either lines or rounds to slide along these rails.

It should go in smoothly, just place it on the rails and it has to fit perfectly and effortlessly. If it doesn't, you may have forgotten to remove one of the seals.

Install a new toner

Once the toner is already installed in the printer, close the cover and you are ready to go. As soon as you close the cover, in fact, you will see that the printer begins to work (if you did not previously turn it off) and to do a self-check to verify that everything is correct.
