How to hide some app icons on your Windows PC

How to Hide and Show Some Desktop Icons on Windows 10. You may want to hide some app icons from your Windows PC if you share them with your family or children. You don’t want anyone to open your work apps and programs. Well, simply hiding the app icons is a solution that seems apt. We will tell you two methods to hide and show some desktop icons on Windows 10.

Unfortunately, you can’t hide multiple Windows 10 desktop icons with a single click. You will need to hide or show the icons separately for each app. We also covered how to hide or show system icons from the desktop. Let’s see what are the two methods to hide and show some desktop icons on Windows 10.

Method 1: delete link

The first method is simple and simply involves deleting the shortcut from the desktop. Deleting the link does not uninstall or completely remove the app. You are simply deleting the shortcut, thus hiding the icon on the desktop. You can still access it from the Start menu, search, or its folder using File Explorer.

Go to the desktop. Use the Windows key + keyboard shortcut D to open the Windows desktop. Right-click the icon you want to hide and select Delete from the menu. A confirmation pop-up will appear. Click Ok to confirm.

How to show deleted icons on the desktop

To show or show the deleted icon again, minimize all open windows to show only the desktop. Then open the Start menu from the bottom left corner. Alternatively, press the Windows key to open the Start menu. Look for the deleted icon from the app list. Drag and drop the app from the Start menu to the desktop. Its shortcut will be created on the desktop, thus showing the icon on the desktop again.

In case it doesn’t work or you experience any problems, open Windows Search and type in the app name. Right-click on it and select Open File Location.

The File Explorer window will open. Right-click on the hidden app icon and select Send to> Desktop (create shortcut).

Method 2: use the hidden property

Another way to hide desktop icons is to change their Attributes property to Hidden. Here are the steps:

Step 1: go to the Windows 10 desktop.

SUGGESTION: press the Show Desktop icon in the system tray to minimize all open windows.

Step 2: right-click the icon you want to hide and select Properties.

The icon will disappear from the desktop. In case the icon is still visible but appears translucent or clear compared to the other icons, it means that the hidden icons can be displayed on your computer. You will need to disable it as shown in the next step.

Step 4: Open File Explorer on your Windows PC 10. Click the View tab at the top. Uncheck the box next to Hidden items.

If you go to the desktop now, you will notice that the icons for which you have enabled the Hidden attribute will no longer appear.

How to show hidden icons

Since hidden icons are no longer displayed on the desktop, they cannot be displayed directly. You will need to show hidden files first, then disable the Hidden attribute as shown below.

Step 1: Open File Explorer by pressing the Windows key + shortcut E or using any other way you prefer. Go to the View tab at the top and check the box next to Hidden items.

Step 2: now go to the desktop. Here you will find the translucent hidden object. Right-click on it and select Properties.

Step 3: do Click on the General tab at the top. Uncheck the box next to Hidden. Click Apply and OK.

Step 4: repeat steps 2 and 3 for all icons you want to appear on the desktop. Perform step 1 and uncheck the box next to Hidden to stop showing hidden files.

Step 3: a pop-up window will appear. Check the box next to the icons you want to show on the desktop. To hide it, deselect the items. Click Apply and OK to save the changes.
