How to increase fps Elden Ring?

How to increase fps Elden Ring: Best Graphics Card settings/ hardware configuration/ Optimization – Elden Ring on PC up to 60 fps/ How do I turn off framerate.

Elden Ring, which was hailed as the magnum opus of FromSoftware before its premiere, finally made its debut, gaining huge popularity. Despite problems with optimization, almost a million computer players simultaneously made their first weekend to the Inbetween. The result speaks for itself. Is it worth playing the Elden Ring now? Is optimization really failing? See for yourself and check the optimal graphics settings in Elden Ring for PC.

What hardware configuration for Elden Ring?

Japanese FromSoftware studio has been creating games on the proprietary PhyreEngine engine for years. And the Elden Ring is no exception. You can see and feel it from the very first moments you start the game. This is another iteration of the engine, but if you were expecting a visual change like the Demon’s Souls remake on PS5, you will be sorely disappointed. These are powdered Sekiro and Souls , and the biggest change – at least at first glance – is the open world.

The latest kid FromSoftware offers a fairly sizeable set of graphics settings. I looked at them and compared them both in terms of graphics and performance. Contrary to appearances, the Elden Ring is a challenge even in this type of test.

Imagine. I can see a fire in the distance. Silence as a poppy seed, so calmly and confidently walk in his direction. No, not to rest after many hardships and struggles in a land full of dangers called the Inbetween. But in order to investigate the effect of the quality of the effects on the fiery bonfire …

And guess what’s happening. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the dragon creature flies at me frantically, and a gigantic stream of fire bursts from its mouth. This, of course, while running away in a panic , er, putting up bravely resistance, burns my samurai dream. You can imagine how this stumbling block dance with the dragon ended for me. But what doesn’t it do to showcase the optimal graphics settings in Elden Ring for PC.

Before you see the results of your adventure in Elden Ring on PC, which is painful and disgusting , read the official hardware requirements first, and then the recommended processors and graphics cards.

Check the minimum and recommended hardware configurations for Elden Ring :

What CPU for the Elden Ring?

FromSoftware studio provided a reasonable i5-8400, a six-core unit without HT support, in the minimum requirements. If you have four cores, however, the CPU should be eight-threaded, as in the Ryzen 3 3300X. Owners of Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i7-4770K can also be satisfied with the smoothness. Of the modern CPUs from the lower price range, the Intel Core i3-10100 (F) should also be able to handle it.

What CPU for the Elden Ring
What CPU for the Elden Ring

For higher details in 1080p, a processor like the Ryzen 5 1600AF and 2600 is fine, but if you want fps to be more stable or play at a higher resolution with a better GPU a safer choice for a fully stable 60fps in 1440p are definitely CPUs like AMD Ryzen 5 3600, Intel Core i5-10400 (F), i7-8700K or i5-10600K.

Overall, the game does not require a powerful CPU. In  Elden Ring , you gain by having eight threads or six physical cores.

What graphics card (GPU) for the Elden Ring?

At the beginning, it should be noted that the game requires a graphics card that supports DirectX 12 libraries. The game is also not very demanding in terms of GPU.

The minimum requirements include the GeForce GTX 1060 with a smaller capacity, but according to the reports of players, e.g. on Reddit, the game also runs smoothly on the GTX 1050 Ti (usually 30-40 fps with almost the lowest settings in 1080p). Even the GTX 970 should be able to handle older cards, although the gameplay will not be the most comfortable.

What graphics card (GPU) for the Elden Ring
What graphics card (GPU) for the Elden Ring

Keep in mind that in the case of a weak GPU the card should be paired with a sufficiently strong processor. It seems that the requirements of Intel Core i5-8400 are the absolute minimum.

For higher details and smoother gameplay, however, I would recommend a minimum of Radeon RX 570 and GeForce GTX 1060 (optimally the 6 GB version). However, the better choice will be the GTX 1650 Super, Radeon RX 580 or RX 5500 XT and 6500 XT. If you want to achieve a relatively stable 60fps in 1080p at high settings, better choose a GTX 1660 Ti, GeForce RTX 3050 or Radeon RX 5600 XT or RX 6600.

At 1440p, the fps will fluctuate sharply between 30-60 frames on the listed GPUs, except for the weakest models that are not suitable for this resolution. A card at the level of the GTX 1660 Ti and GTX 1070 or the Radeon RX 5600 XT seems to be a comfortable minimum. The GeForce RTX 2070 (Super), RTX 3060 (Ti) and Radeon RX 6600 XT, RX 5700 XT and especially RX 6700 XT models perform better in these conditions.

4K resolution and a stable 60fps can be achieved on the GeForce RTX 3080 and Radeon RX 6800 (XT). On the RTX 3070 (Ti) and RX 6800, slight lowering of details may be necessary.

Graphics options in Elden Ring for PC. Compare performance and image quality

In a word of introduction: in general, virtually all graphics settings in Elden Ring do not change much in terms of performance. In the case of graphics, the changes are more visible. But sometimes I had to go to the trouble of finding the right place to visualize the differences in image quality.

When it comes to performance, I used the charts only with larger fps differences. In other cases, it didn’t make sense to show them when they were 1-2 fps or even a fraction of the lower value. These are usually differences of the order of (less than) 1-3% – in individual cases they reach almost 5%. The exception is the quality of the grass, which is the most aggravating setting in the game.

Performance tests were performed on the latest version of the game at the time of writing: 1.02.1. Remembering the early days of FromSoftware for PC, you will be glad to see how many possibilities it provides in Elden Ring ‘s graphics settings , especially with regards to shading and lighting. At least seemingly – because, as I mentioned, some options in the game do not change as much as you would like. It’s time to clear your doubts. To work!

Screen settings and quality modes in Elden Ring

Resolution

If you are not satisfied with changing the graphics options, you may want to consider changing the resolution. On modern monitors, however, it is associated with a large loss of quality. In that case, it is worth betting on alternative solutions that, to some extent, eliminate the problems associated with resignation from native resolution.

Unfortunately, Elden Ring does not support either DLSS or FidelityFX Super Resolution . Perhaps this will change later. But select GeForce owners can take advantage of NVIDIA Image Scaling , which you activate from the driver. What about Radeon users? They have to wait until the debut of AMD Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) , which – like a competitive solution – is included in the Adrenalin software.

Elden Ring a ultrawide. Does the game support ultra-wide monitors?

The game does not support ultra-wide monitors (e.g. 21: 9 format), and thus – during the game you will see black stripes on the left and right sides. The Flawless Widescreen tool , which was created for games that do not have native support for the wide-angle format, comes to the rescue.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. In the Elden Ring game folder (where eldenring.exe is) create a text file named steam_appid.txt.
  2. Open the created file and paste the following numbers there: 1245620 . Write it down. This way you deactivate the EAC (Easy Anti-Cheat) system in the game.
  3. Turn on Flawless Widescreen and select Elden Ring from the list . Set up the game properly and you’re ready to go. From now on, you can fully enjoy it in 21: 9 format.
  4. You must start the game from an .exe file, not via Steam (then this method does not work).

Note: It is recommended that you use Flawless Widescreen in Elden Ring offline due to the presence of an anti-cheat system. Disabling online gameplay and the EAC system may be necessary to avoid a possible ban from Bandai Namco. You install at your own risk.

Automatic render settings

This is an additional option that turns rendering into a more simplified one when performance starts to leave much to be desired. If your equipment reaches 40-60 fps in the game, you don’t have to bother with this setting. With this fps value, I did not notice any differences in graphics and performance.

Enable if the frame rate is low (30fps and below?) And you are notoriously experiencing drastic drops. Perhaps then the gameplay will work at least with a few more fps or just more stable. However, it lacks more detailed settings or information about what exactly and when changes the automatic render setting.

Settings: on or off

Quality settings

Graphic presets: the game automatically adjusts all options to a certain level of image quality. The game looks poor in the lowest details. It is also not the best in medium-sized ones. Only on the other presets it presents a good graphic level, so it is worth adjusting individual options so as not to lose too much of the image quality, and at the same time achieve performance close to medium or high details.

Texture Quality

Relatively minor impact on image performance and quality. The textures in the higher settings are slightly more detailed, but the difference is so small that you don’t need to set high detail. Thanks to the medium settings you can get 2 fps, which is – for the Elden Ring – a good result without losing too much of the texture quality.

Settings: low, medium, high and maximum

Antialiasing Quality

Smoothing the edges is of utmost importance in the Elden Ring . I advise against lower settings, even at higher resolutions (1440p, UWQHD or 4K). The image loses sharpness and makes the game look terrible with AA turned off or low. The Elden Ring only performs well with top-quality smoothing. Contrary to appearances, the fps drop is not large – the difference between the individual options is only half a frame (yes, half a frame) at 1440p.

SSAO (Screen Space Ambient Occlusion)

In Elden Ring , it is not possible to choose the method of shading objects ( Ambient Occlusion ) that affects the depth of the scene. SSAO (ambient occlusion in the screen space) is not the newest and the most advanced and precise shading technique, but it does a basic job. There is also a plus: it doesn’t put a lot of pressure on the GPU, and you can turn it off completely.

The creators will allow you to decide on the quality level in a fairly wide range, which affects the resolution and precision of the rendered shadows. Still, you’d be better off choosing between different releases of Ambient Occlusion.

In the comparison screenshots, don’t be fooled by the stronger shading on trees in the middle settings. Contrary to appearances, it does not mean higher quality. It proves the imprecision and not well reflected shading in the presented scenes. You will only notice higher fidelity in reproduction in the high setting. For example, take a look at the shadows visible on the building or ruins, which, with a higher quality level, give the scene adequate depth.

SSAO does not drastically affect performance – there is a difference of 2 fps between the lowest and maximum settings. For this reason, I do not recommend below high quality options. I strongly advise you not to completely get rid of SSAO in the game, because it affects the quality of graphics quite clearly.

Depth of Field

Depth of field blurs the image in the far plane. Usually it has a marginal effect on performance, and it’s no different in FromSoftware.

Adds or improves the quality of blur when, for example, moving the character while slashing a weapon. Negligible impact on performance – the choice is yours.

Shadow Quality

No need to explain here. The setting affects the resolution of the shadows. However, there is one point worth highlighting. Well, in the lower settings, the shadows are not only poorly detailed, but also show ugly flickering during the game. Inevitably, you won’t notice this unpleasant effect on the screens. For this reason, I do not recommend turning on lower settings (including medium).

Settings: low, medium, high, maximumMaximum shadow qualityPoor shadow qualityMedium shadow qualityHigh quality of the shadowsMaximum shadow qualityPoor shadow quality

Light Quality

Affects whether the lighting casts a shadow or not. It does not shed at the lowest grade of quality. In the following, the difference is only in the quality of the shadows. A hardly noticeable change during the game, because it occurs in a relatively small number of places. But the performance differences between the lowest and the highest are negligible (1 fps).

Settings: low, medium, high, maximum

Effects Quality

It changes the quality of the illumination effect intensity, which is especially visible during exploration at night. It is enough to focus your eyes on a fire or a lit torch. This is another option with a marginal impact on the game performance (about 1 fps difference between the extreme settings). The difference in appearance, however, is noticeable, at least between the lowest settings and the others. The quality of the effects looks pretty good even at the medium level.

Consideration: Medium setting. It is doubtful whether during the more spectacular clashes, which are permeated with various effects, there will be a slight “out of breath” GPU. The challenge, however, is a repetition of both variants in a plausible scenario, so it is difficult to clearly verify how much it worsens the performance in the heat of the fight. However, it is worth bearing in mind.

Volumetric Quality Lighting

Volumetric lighting affects the quality of the scattered light. Makes the shadows visible, e.g. behind the fog, more outlined (more detailed) at higher settings. However, it is difficult to find suitable places in the game where this effect is clearly visible. It also has a moderate – as for the Elden Ring – influence on fps – about 2 fps (between extreme options).

Reflection Quality

Improves the quality of reflections, e.g. in water. The difference is not drastic, but with each successive degree it is visible to the naked eye. Although it cannot be denied that it is more visible during the game than on the screens. However, you do not necessarily have to give up high settings, because the difference in performance is only 1 fps between the extreme quality levels.

Shader Quality

The shading has a minor performance impact. There is 1-2 fps difference between the low and highest settings; between the high and the maximum is practically non-existent. In turn, the impact on the graphics is already noticeable. This option translates into the quality (resolution) of shading objects.

Grass Quality

Affects the density of grass in locations. The maximum settings are quite clearly – for this game – lowered by fps (3-4 fps), so I recommend them only for quite powerful PCs. The medium setting seems to be a good compromise. I do not recommend the lowest setting which keeps the amount of grass to a minimum.

Elden Ring a ray tracing. Does the game support ray tracing?

Elden Ring does not support ray tracing. Still, because FromSoftware intends to add the RT option later, which the studio officially confirmed before the game’s premiere. However, it is unclear when this will happen and to what extent the ray tracing is being talked about. Considering the technical condition of the game, ray tracing will probably not be a priority for the developers at the moment.

With the debut of ray tracing in the Elden Ring , there is a chance that the manufacturer will add NVIDIA DLSS and / or AMD FSR support in the game .

Elden Ring on PC up to 60 fps. How do I turn off framerate?

Elden Ring gameplay is locked to 60fps. PC gamers look at this type of limit unfavorably, because they want to take full advantage of the capabilities of high-hertz monitors. It is hard to say what the decision is. It doesn’t necessarily have to be related to the laziness, priorities or lack of time of the FromSoftware developers. It may as well be closely related to the physics of the game.

Is it possible to disable the frame lock in Elden Ring on PC? How to do it? A fan of the game who created the Elden Ring FPS Unlocker modification comes to the rescue. Thanks to it, you can lift the fps limit, change the speed of the game or increase the field of view (FOV, Field of View ). In the newer version, the author of the mod even added support for ultra-wide monitors (as an alternative to Flawless Widescreen).

Elden Ring on PC up to 60 fps. How do I turn off framerate

Before using the tool, be sure to turn off the online mode in the game and block the EAC anti-cheat system in order not to risk blocking your Elden Ring account . Before using FPS Unlocker, please make sure Easy Anti-Cheat and Online Mode have been deactivated. You use the modification at your own risk.

The manual looks similar to the Flawless Widescreen. Please follow the steps below:

  1. In the Elden Ring game folder (where eldenring.exe is) create a text file named steam_appid.txt.
  2. Open the created file and paste the following numbers there: 1245620 . Write it down. This way you deactivate the EAC (Easy Anti-Cheat) system in the game.
  3. Run Elden Ring FPS Unlocker and set the game as you like.

You can also disable Easy Anti-Cheat in the following way:

  1. Go to the main folder with the game Elden Ring .
  2. Rename the exe file to something like start_protected_game_backup.exe (or whatever).
  3. Make a backup copy of eldenring.exe.
  4. A copy of the eldenring. exe , change to start_protected_game.exe.
  5. Launch the Elden Ring normally from Steam.
  6. After starting the game, you will receive a message that the offline mode is activated.

Optimization of Elden Ring for PC. Crying and gnashing of teeth

Despite a few patches, the optimization of Elden Ring for PC still leaves a lot to be desired. From what you could already read on the web, and my tests have confirmed, the game suffers from massive stuttering. Clashes occur not only during fights with larger opponents and with a large dose of visual effects, but even during a leisurely walk. As if that were not enough, there are also drastic slowdowns in animation smoothness. There is absolutely no justification for the drop in performance.

Optimization of Elden Ring for PC. Crying and gnashing of teeth
Optimization of Elden Ring for PC. Crying and gnashing of teeth

Imagine halfway up the stairs, suddenly the game starts to “choke” and the performance is going headlong. This is like an inexplicable drop in frames per second. All you have to do is go back a few steps or go a little further and the situation returns to normal. The ailments disappear as he took his hand off. Absurd. And there are surprisingly many places like this in the Elden Ring . And it happens regardless of the computer’s components, because the game can run badly even on top RTXs.

The hardware requirements are not drastically high by themselves, but also the visual side of the Elden Ring is not even close to the heights of modern possibilities. The game looks better than all previous FromSoftware games, but the graphics – and the technical side of it – do not even impress for a game intended for consoles of the previous generation. But on the other hand, the Elden Ring isn’t ugly either. What is it? There is no shortage of locations that will take your breath away. In a word – overall the level of graphics is quite uneven.

Is it worth playing Elden Ring on PC now?

Unfortunately, optimization is problematic and still requires a lot of fixes. Anyway, it turned out to be troublesome not only on the PC. Should you hold off on playing the Elden Ring ? It depends – the game isn’t as badly optimized as the BF 2042 , but it’s still close to the initial stage of Cyberpunk 2077 on PC. It’s not that bad, but it’s not good at all.

Is it worth playing Elden Ring on PC now
Is it worth playing Elden Ring on PC now

It is possible to play, but you can often curse the journey of the Inbetween, rather than fully enjoying it. Especially when it starts clipping or slowing down in an extremely important fight. After all, in the Elden Ring , it is very important to react quickly to the opponent’s movements, and any slowdowns then constitute an additional obstacle (in) to overcome.

Technical ills, unfortunately, still bother you mercilessly in version 1.02.1. The only question is how badly the DirectX 12 implementation has gone and how quickly FromSoftware is able to improve it. In addition, the 60fps blockade is disgusting, which requires more effort to remove than necessary due to the use of the Easy Anti-Cheat system.

It did not hurt, however, for the reviewers to pour out “tens”. However, it is difficult to turn a blind eye to such problems, because they are and can be felt, especially in the soulslike game, in which you die more often than in most games. The Elden Ring may be perfect, but at the moment it is a very imperfect perfection that requires many more touches to fully justify such high marks.
