How to Increase RX 5700 XT Evoke OC Mining

How to ‘Increase/ Max/ Optimize’ MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC Mining : Overclocking | Hashrate| MSI Afterburner | Best Settings| Power Consumption (WATT) – Putting our hand to our hearts, let’s say that recent years have been very difficult for AMD in the field of graphics accelerators: constant delays and the role of a catch-up player, the inability to impose a technical advantage … And only a turning point to a modified GPU architecture codenamed “Navi”, a reduced technical processor 7nm and the move to TSMC power allowed the “red” to take a confident step forward and join the upper segment of video cards, where, like AMD Ryzen processors, they loudly declare themselves. And while we are waiting for junior and senior solutions (RX 5300/5500/5800), let’s take a close look at the current generation.

How to Increase MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC Mining

MSI was one of the first to announce non-reference video cards of the Radeon RX 5700 (XT) family, which differed in originality and proprietary technologies. The MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC stood out in particular – a “champagne-colored” model, as the manufacturer called it, whose designers were clearly impressed by the Sapphire Nitro + line. But the creators have introduced many of their own innovations, which we will talk about.

Packaging and equipment

MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC comes in a large paper box with black printing and a gold image of the novelty. The manufacturer emphasizes the main advantages of the new line and proprietary technologies, including the fourth generation PCI Express interface, GDDR6 video memory, factory overclocking and an unreferenced cooling system.

A cardboard box with soft filler is hidden inside the package. The video card is hidden in an antistatic bag and is surrounded by the following equipment:

  • User guide;
  • Thank you brochure;
  • MSI branded product brochure.

Various cables, adapters, stickers and holders are missing.

Appearance and design

The MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC graphics card stands out for its original shapes with rounded edges and a light gold-plated design, which the manufacturer affectionately calls “champagne”. The developers have placed great emphasis on the appearance of the new product, which is emphasized by the increased cooling system, which is necessary for efficient and quiet operation. However, fate was not so favorable.

The length of the graphics accelerator is only 254 mm, the width is up to 129 mm, but in the case the new product will cover 2.5 expansion slots, which you should be prepared for.

Additional power supply for MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC is carried out according to the “8 + 6” -pin scheme, providing the graphics card with up to 300 W of energy. The consumption level and TDP are much lower, they are limited at around 225 W, but thanks to the expansion of the Power Limit, we are able to increase this figure to 270 W with high overclocking.

For ease of connection, two connectors are recessed into the body, allowing for more beautiful cable management.

The rear interface panel has wide slots for unhindered hot air and reference video outputs, matching the reference:

  • 3 x DisplayPort 1.4;
  • 1 x HDMI 2.0b.

How to Maximize: lock frequencies, power consumption, temperature, noise level and overclocking

Out of the box, the GIGABYTE Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC does not have any practically significant differences from the reference video card in its main performance characteristics. The factory overclocked GPU translates into a modest 54MHz boost and 7W power consumption under load in Crysis 3. The GAMING OC’s superior performance is not theoretical performance, but noise and component cooling. The cooler of an open design with three fans keeps the GPU at a temperature of no more than 70 ° C (13 ° C lower compared to the “turbine”) and at the same time runs much quieter. However, if silence is at the forefront, then potential owners of the Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC will have to adjust the fan control curve accordingly.

A few experiments since the summer debut of the Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT were enough to finally give up the enthusiasm for overclocking Navi 10 chips. They simply cannot effectively scale performance along with clock speeds, although from a formal point of view they overclock quite well – especially after we have access to the PowerPlay program tables (either directly through the Windows registry or using the MorePowerTool utility).

Nevertheless, we could not ignore the overclocking of the Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC – and achieved even better results than we expected. Thanks to the twice increased power reserve and an aggressive voltage / frequency curve with the upper point at 2150 MHz and 1.225 V, the actual GPU clock frequency stabilized at 2058 MHz in Crysis 3. Surely this is not the limit, but further overclocking rests on the capabilities of the cooling system, but specifically – the need to keep the temperature of the hottest point of the GPU within 110 ° C, after which throttling begins. Therefore, it turns out that the power consumption of the overclocked video card increased by only 19 W, but we still had to increase the allowed fan speed from 40 to 60% of the maximum.

Notice that at the same time, the average temperature of the GPU practically did not suffer from overclocking, but at the hot spot it is already balancing on the brink of a foul. Of course, at maximum speed, the Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC cooler could give the GPU the strength to jerk a few tens of megahertz, but Navi 10 in such conditions left the zone far behind, after which investment in the clock frequency brings practically significant dividends. And in terms of noise level, the video card was compared to the Radeon VII, which, by the way, runs so loudly for exactly the same reasons related to the GPU temperature in the hot spot.

However, Navi 10 in such conditions left behind the zone, after which investment in clock frequency pays practically significant dividends. We managed to increase the bandwidth of the GDDR6 RAM from 14 to 14.8 Gb / s per bus pin, which seems to be a typical result for chips made by Micron.

lock frequencies, power consumption, temperature, noise level and overclocking

Note: the measurement of all parameters is performed after the GPU has warmed up and the clock frequencies have stabilized.

Despite all the difficulties described, we must admit that in the totality of all factors (clock speed gain, GPU temperature and noise level), the GIGABYTE accelerator is much better prepared for overclocking the GPU than its counterparts that we studied earlier. And he coped with the undervolting even more successfully. For one reason or another (whether it is variability in silicon characteristics, imperfection of control algorithms, or simple reinsurance) AMD has put in the Radeon RX 5700 XT a significant supply of GPU voltage, which the user can safely reduce – especially if he is ready to sacrifice several dozen megahertz core frequency. In order to reduce the voltage under load from 1.095 to 1 V, Our Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC demanded to shift the top clock position from 2060 to 1910 MHz, but in real load – in Crysis 3 – the GPU lost only 16 MHz. The result of the undervolting was a drop in power consumption from 227 to 196 W and an accompanying extremely low noise level.

After some recent experiments with the SAPPHIRE board, we began to pay close attention to the temperature of the GDDR6 chips with which the 5700 series video cards are equipped, especially in undervolting conditions. In terms of cooling RAM, the design of the Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC is also suspicious, but in fact it does not lead to overheating of the RAM chips even when the fans are running at low speeds. Note, however, that although we ran all tests on an open bench, the RAM temperature was dangerously close to the Micron’s 90 ° C tolerance. And, by the way, and without any undervolting with a decrease in the frequency of rotation of the fans, because GIGABYTE has laid an absolutely minimal “airbag”.

Cooling system

MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC received a completely new cooling system, which received only the name from the Twin Frozr generation, and the design itself turned out to be much more interesting and more complex due to the original design.
First of all, this concerns the adhesive base between the backplate and the cooler casing, aimed at reducing vibration and hiding the joint between them. The cooling system itself turned out to be massive and impressive, which is indirectly indicated by the 2.5-expansion slots.

The cooler is a single section heatsink pierced with four heat pipes and recruited with 52 fins. All connections are carefully soldered.

At the base is a nickel-plated copper plate that covers the heat pipes for even heat distribution. The sole is polished to a mirror finish, but not perfect. An additional insert covers eight video memory chips. As previously reported by users, the manufacturer reacted mediocrely to the cooling of the 2 central chips, the contact with which turned out to be terrible, and the GDDR6 memory was very hot.

The proprietary TORX 3.0 fans with two types of blades are responsible for active cooling. Before us is the PLD09210S12HH model produced by Power Logic with a rotation speed of 0-3400 rpm and Fan Stop technology.

The first revision of the MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC video card came to our tests, which was noted by unscrupulous thermal pads on memory chips and their absence on a fairly massive metal backplate that engineers could use.

The manufacturer is aware of the problem and, as we learned, is preparing an updated model MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC, which received the “GP” postmark, with new thermal pads.

Printed circuit board

The MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC graphics card is built on a custom-designed non-reference PCB that also powers the popular Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 (XT) Pulse.
The heart of the review hero is the Navi 10 XT graphics processor. At the moment, this GPU is the senior chip in the NAVI line and includes 2560 shaders, 64 rasterization units and 160 texture units.

The power subsystem is built according to a nine-phase scheme (7 + 2, GPU / Mem) and is controlled by the IR35217 and NCP81022 PWM controllers, respectively.

The video memory is Micron GDDR6 standard 9JA77 D9WCW. Their clock frequency is 1750 MHz (effective frequency 14000 MHz).

The noise level was measured using a TM-102 digital sound level meter with a measurement error of no more than 0.5 dBA. The measurements were taken from a distance of 0.3 m. The background noise level in the room was no more than 28 dBA. All system fans, including the one installed in the power supply, were turned off. Additionally, readings of the power consumption were taken using a Robiton PM-2 wattmeter and the temperature of the printed circuit board with a Fluke 59 Max IR thermometer.

Review of the video card MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X (8 GB)

Subject of research : Mass-produced 3D graphics accelerator (video card) MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X 8 GB 256-bit GDDR6

Briefly about the main thing

At the beginning of all reviews of serial video cards, we update our knowledge about the performance of the family to which the accelerator belongs and its competitors. All this is subjectively assessed by us on a scale of five gradations.

If we put all these magic ray traces and smart tensors out of our heads, then the bottom line in terms of speed in 3D in general, the Radeon RX 5700 XT accelerators are about the level of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (a miracle happened: the AMD flagship finally caught up with the Nvidia flagship – true, 4 years ago) and are exactly between the GeForce RTX 2060 Super and the RTX 2070 Super (closer to the latter, so the RTX 2070 was left behind). Previously, our research showed that the GeForce RTX 2070 is perfect for most games at resolutions up to 2560 × 1440, inclusive, when using the maximum graphics quality. Considering that the Radeon RX 5700 XT is slightly better in performance, with this accelerator you can get some comfort even in games in 4K resolution (at the same maximum settings), although, of course, not in all.

How to Increase RX 5700 XT Evoke OC Mining: Card characteristics

Memory

The card has 8 GB of GDDR6 SDRAM located in 8 8 Gbit chips on the front side of the PCB. Micron memory chips (GDDR6, MT61K256M32JE-14) are designed for a nominal operating frequency of 3500 (14000) MHz. The decryptor of codes on FBGA packages can be found here.

Card features and comparison with reference design

Obviously, the PCB and wiring in general have undergone significant changes. The power supply subsystem has been strengthened – and this is the main reason for the design redesign.

Actually, the core power supply circuit is 9-phase,

controlled by the PWM controller International Rectifier (Infineon) IR35217. This controller is one of the most secretive, so to speak. There is very little information about it, and almost all reviewers simply mention its use without giving details.

There are phase doublers on the board, it can be clearly seen.

Apparently, the controller controls five phases, and the core power circuit – for example, 4 + 1, of which 4 have doublers, as a result, we have 8 + 1 = 9 assemblies of the DrMos type.

Also on the front side there is another PWM controller (On Semiconductor NCP81022),

which controls the 3-phase power supply of the memory chips.

There is also a controller for backlight control and monitoring.

The nominal memory frequencies are equal to the reference values, but the core frequency is higher, which, as it turned out during testing, provides a performance increase of around 7.5%.

The MSI board has the usual set of video outputs: three DisplayPort and one HDMI. Power is supplied through two 8-pin connectors.

The operation of the card is controlled using the proprietary MSI Dragon Center utility.

Heating and cooling

The basis of the CO is a large nickel-plated two-piece radiator with plate fins, all parts of which are pierced with numerous heat pipes soldered to a large sole, cooling the GPU chip. The radiator fins are wavy to reduce noise levels. A separate sole on the same radiator is pressed against the power elements of the power converter. But the memory chips have their own heatsink. A thick plate is installed on the back of the card, which serves not only as a stiffener, but also as a PCB cooler.

A shroud with two 95mm Torx 3.0 fans is installed on top of the radiator. They have dispersion blades for increased cooling efficiency.

The cooler stops the fans if the GPU temperature drops below 55 degrees. Of course, the CO becomes silent at the same time. When the PC starts up, the fans work, but after loading the video driver, the operating temperature is polled, and they are turned off.

Temperature Monitoring with MSI Afterburner (by A. Nikolaychuk AKA Unwinder):

After a 6-hour run under load, the maximum core temperature did not exceed 66 degrees, which is a very good result for a video card of this level.

Maximum heating – the central area of the PCB near the GPU and power converters.

Noise

The noise measurement technique assumes that the room is noise-insulated and damped, and reverberations are reduced. The system unit, in which the noise of video cards is examined, does not have fans and is not a source of mechanical noise. The background level of 18 dBA is the noise level in the room and the noise level of the sound level meter itself. Measurements are taken from a distance of 50 cm from the video card at the level of the cooling system.

Measurement modes:

  • Idle mode in 2D: loaded internet browser with iXBT.com website, Microsoft Word window, a number of internet communicators
  • 2D mode with movie viewing: SmoothVideo Project (SVP) is used – hardware decoding with insertion of intermediate frames
  • 3D mode with maximum load on the accelerator: using FurMark benchmark

The assessment of the noise level gradations is as follows:

  • less than 20 dBA: conditionally silent
  • 20 to 25 dBA: very quiet
  • from 25 to 30 dBA: quiet
  • 30 to 35 dBA: clearly audible
  • 35 to 40 dBA: loud but bearable
  • above 40 dBA: very loud

In 2D idle mode, the temperature was 36 ° C, the fans were not rotating, the noise level was equal to the background one.

When watching a movie with hardware decoding, nothing changed, the noise remained at the same level.

Under maximum load in 3D (no overclocking), the temperature reached 66 ° C. At the same time, the fans spun up to 1260 rpm, the noise rose to 26.2 dBA, which is quiet.

The video above clearly shows that, against the general background of a working PC, turning on and off the fans of the video card does not cause an obvious jump in the noise level.

Backlight

The backlighting of the card is very modest, it is concentrated only on the end of the card in the form of a small bar with the logo and the name of the series.

Actually, only she glows. Compared to how modding PCs can now be equipped with backlighting, this video card looks overly modest.

It’s surprising that the cards of the same Gaming X series, based on Nvidia GeForce accelerators, offer much richer lighting, and only MSI designers know why the cards based on Radeon are deprived. Despite the small size of the glowing element, the lighting can still be controlled from the Mystic Light tab in the same large Dragon Center utility.

Scope of delivery and packaging

The basic package must include a user’s manual, media with drivers and utilities. We see the basic kit, plus the bonus flyers.

Ratings

IXBT.com Rating

The iXBT.com accelerator rating demonstrates to us the functionality of video cards relative to each other and is normalized for the weakest accelerator – Radeon RX 550 (that is, the combination of speed and functions of RX 550 is taken as 100%). Ratings are carried out for 28 accelerators that we study every month as part of the Best Video Card of the Month project. A group of cards for analysis is selected from the general list, which includes the RX 5700 XT and its competitors.

To calculate the utility rating, we used retail prices at the end of October 2021 .

At the time of this writing, the weighted average prices for the GeForce RTX 2060 Super were slightly lower than those for the Radeon RX 5700 XT, so the Nvidia accelerator is the leader in its group, but the RX 5700 XT lags very little. But the cost of the MSI card (like all non-reference cards based on the Radeon RX 5700 / XT) at the time of this writing remained excessively high, the tested model was able to take only the third place in its group. Of course, prices are unstable. It is possible that soon the RX 5700 XT in non-reference versions will be able to boast of a more attractive ratio of features and prices.

Again, it must be reiterated that the utility rating only takes into account pure performance (with caveats), and things like noise, lighting, design elements, and a set of video outputs are not counted by definition.

conclusions

MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Gaming X (8 GB) – one of the interesting options for a gaming-grade 3D graphics accelerator with a price of around 30,000 rubles. At the time of writing, the GeForce RTX 2060 Super looked a little more attractive and ranked higher in the utility rating, but the RTX 2060 Super is not definitely suitable for 2.5K resolution, while the Radeon RX 5700 XT feels great in games at this resolution. As prices fall, we can safely recommend the RX 5700 XT for purchase.

The reviewed MSI card has an excellent cooling system, quiet even under maximum load, and generally silent under low load. Modders might be disappointed by the card’s modest lighting options, although the lighting effects are good here. As a plus, it is worth mentioning the presence of proprietary software (Dragon Center), which makes it possible to easily change the modes of operation of the card, as well as optimize the settings in games so that on a particular video card you can comfortably play in one resolution or another.

We repeat that the Radeon RX 5700 XT as a whole provides the player with complete comfort at maximum graphics settings at a resolution of 2560 × 1440 in all games, and in a number of games you can try to play with the same graphics quality in 4K.

Standard frequencies

The manufacturer has flashed the MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC video card with the latest BIOS version with modified GPU clock frequencies and fan curves, optimizing the graphics accelerator for new user requirements, which makes the review all the more interesting for considering the new item.

MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC is factory overclocked to 85 MHz in normal mode and up to 40 MHz in boost.

At idle, the fans stop, making the novelty silent. Thanks to the massive heatsink, the temperatures of the core, memory and power unit are within comfortable limits.

Here are the detailed specifications of the MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC firmware. The TDP indicator is not specified, the expansion of the limits is possible in the range from -50% to + 20%, the BIOS is dated August 15, 2021.

Earlier, the developers received multiple negative reviews for noisy fans and overvoltage, leading to heating of the main components of the video card. MSI has tried to programmatically solve the multiple shortcomings of the Evoke model and plans to release an updated version in the future, so we will take a close look at the interim fixes and the behavior of the graphics accelerator.

MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC boosts up to 1875 MHz, warms up to 71 * C for the chip and 81 * C for the power subsystem at a fan speed of 2000 rpm. As you can see from the graph, the engineers have fixed the rotation curve at this point and it does not rise above it. The noise level is average, comfortable for long-term work. GPU power consumption is also limited at 200 W, and the average voltage is 1.137 V. The temperature of the hottest part of the chip and video memory has approached the high mark of 90 * C, which indicates the need for further improvements.

If by the will of fate you became the owner of the MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC, then the dunvolting process will cool the hot temper of the video card. The novelty is completely stable at 1062 mV and Power Limit -15%, the core clock frequency increased to ~ 1900 MHz. Strange behavior of the fans is observed, where over time their speed decreases from 2000 rpm to 1800 rpm, and the initial temperature gap decreases from 5-8 * C to 3-4 * C, which, in principle, is also not bad, and the noise level becomes below average.

Manual overclocking

The MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC video card can be overclocked to 2050 MHz in the core and 1900 MHz in memory, the cooler speed has gone up sharply, as well as the temperatures, where the GPU Hot Spot and Memory are approaching almost 100 * C. Overclocking is contraindicated in this version of Evoke.

The performance level of MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT Evoke OC from manual overclocking increases by 4-7%.

Unfortunately, due to the temperature conditions of the MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT, the Evoke OC cannot sustain increased clock speeds for a long time, which leads to mediocre results in games under prolonged load.

Thermal photographs

All thermal images were taken under maximum load for a general presentation and understanding of the cooling system with a slight overclocked core and memory.

Having installed the thermal camera on top, we see that the GPU temperature does not exceed 61 degrees – a good result.

Please note that the coolers do an excellent job, the residual heat is dissipated and is not stored inside the card.

Having installed the camera from the back of the video card, where the backplate is located, we see that the GPU temperature does not exceed 53 degrees.

Please note that there was only one card in an open stand. In a dense mining rig, the GPU temperature can go up to 70 degrees. This is not a critical indicator, but you will have to think about additional cooling.

Also, we did not test 1 card for a long time in an open barn with a slight overclocking, the GPU temperature reached 68-70 degrees.

Summary graphs: temperature regime, noise level, consumption

The main value of such materials is not only a listing of commercially available graphics accelerators, but also a study of the potential of cooling systems. And since the results were obtained by us at the same stand, it is possible to compare video cards in almost ideal conditions.

The graph of the electricity consumed by the entire stand depending on the frequencies of the video cards and the operating voltage of the GPU.

Power consumption in 2D measured when the system was idle (on the desktop). Testing in 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme was carried out in the “Stability Test” mode, 20 runs.

Memory and power consumption

The video card is equipped with 8 gigabytes of GDDR6. Most often sourced from Micron .

Each memory chip is labeled ” 9KA77D9WCW

As we have already said, the frequency of the card is 1835 MHz – this means that the card was already overclocked for you at the factory (core – +80 MHz), but you can overclock it a little yourself if you have the necessary knowledge.

It should be noted that under overclocking, the card can consume up to 240 watts without downvolting.

Recall that the card is equipped with 1 × 6 and 1 × 8 Pin power connectors, where 75 watts goes through the riser (or PCI-e), and the remaining 125 watts or 165 watts (depending on overclocking) goes through connectors 1 × 6 and 1 × 8 Pin.

For a farm of 6 Sapphire RX 5700 PULSE 8GB video cards and a connected power system (motherboard, SSD, processor), you will need 1 1600 Watt power supply unit or 2 800-850 Watt units.

You can find out how to power a farm with 2 power supplies on our website.

Also on our website you can choose an excellent block for mining: the corresponding section contains detailed articles about different power supplies: their configuration, efficiency, drawdowns, ripple, parsing and much more.
