How to ‘Increase/ Max/ Optimize/ Tune/ Boost/ Improve’ “Hashrate” Radeon HD 4850 Gaming: Overclocking | Benchmark | GDDR3 2000 MHz – To understand how the new RV770 graphics chip is qualitatively different from the representatives of the two previous generations, just look at its schematic representation.

If we compare the new scheme with the one used in the R600/RV670 chip , the differences are obvious. The texture units in the new chip are tied to stream processors, AMD has seriously redesigned the operation of the L1 and L2 cache memory built into the GPU, improved the ROP units and increased the number of stream processors to 800 pieces.

The anti-aliasing system has undergone major changes, as a result of which its speed has significantly increased, and 2x/4x MSAA anti-aliasing is now completely free! In the following articles, we plan to dwell on this point in more detail, as well as compare the quality of anti-aliasing for AMD and NVIDIA video cards. For reference, here is a table with the technical characteristics of the new video cards and compare them with the previous generation:

How to Increase Radeon HD 4850 Gaming: Specification

We will study the Radeon HD4870 on the example of a video card provided to us for testing by HIS.

How to Tune: HIS Radeon HD4870

The packaging of the HIS Radeon HD4870 video card is small in size, made in blue tones. Both sides of the box contain key information about the video card.

The video card package contains:

  • DVI > D-sub adapter;
  • DVI > HDMI adapter;
  • S-video adapter > tulip;
  • adapter S-video > component out;
  • bridge CrossFire;
  • CD with drivers;
  • user manual, memo about available Steam games;
  • body sticker;
  • branded screwdriver-flashlight-level;

The video card does not come with adapters for powering the video card, but there is a branded screwdriver with a flashlight and a level gauge. Let’s get a look:

The screwdriver set includes two nozzles, each of which is equipped with two heads. The first nozzle is used to work with flat hats, the second – with cruciform ones. A level is also built into the screwdriver body.

A flashlight based on a super-bright LED is mounted near the attachment socket. The switch is located next to the level gauge, and there is no need to hold it, since it is a switch, not a button.

The main inhabitant of the box itself practically does not differ from the one that AMD showed to the whole world, except that the sticker on the fan is still branded, HIS. To power the Radeon HD4870 video card, there are two 6-pin connectors in the tail of the video card, unlike the younger Radeon HD4850, which has only one connector. A reinforced power system was required for the stable operation of the video card at higher frequencies. So, compared to the Radeon HD4850 video card, the Radeon HD4870 GPU frequency is 125 MHz higher and is equal to 750 MHz, and the effective GDDR5 video memory frequency is 3600 MHz, which is significantly higher than 1986 MHz, which the video memory of the Radeon HD4850 video card operates on.True, it’s worth making a reservation here, the real frequency of the new GDDR5 memory is 900 MHz, it’s just that it doesn’t transmit twice in one cycle,

The cooling system of the video card very much resembles the one used in the Radeon HD2900XT video cards . A copper insert with two heat pipes and aluminum sheets serves to cool the GPU, a painted aluminum alloy frame cools the memory chips and power subsystem chips, and also adds rigidity to the entire structure. To prevent distortion of the copper insert and, as a result, damage to the graphics chip, it is made independent of the metal frame.

Of the external differences, compared to the Radeon HD4850 video card , the power subsystem in the Radeon HD4870 has changed, and the AMD logo has appeared above the PCI-express x16 slot. Although the novelty is equipped with the latest GDDR5 video memory, its location on the printed circuit board is no different from the location of the GDDR3 video memory on the Radeon HD4850 video card.

The Radeon HD4870 uses the same RV770 graphics chip as the Radeon HD4850.

GDDR5 video memory chips are manufactured by Qimonda. The nominal effective clock frequency according to the passport for this memory is 4.0 GHz, while the standard one, at which this memory functions on the Radeon HD4870 video card, as we have already said, is 3.6 GHz

Under load in 3D mode, the graphics chip of the Radeon HD4870 operates at a frequency of 750 MHz, and during idle, its frequency drops to 500 MHz.

About three months ago, I commented that the ATi HD Radeon 4850 it was a very interesting option from a theoretical point of view, without real tests.

Almost since then I have been testing one of these cards, more specifically the HIS Radeon HD 4850, on a fairly powerful computer. High-performance applications and, above all, video games with which I think you can draw some pretty good conclusions.

Radeon HD 4850 Gaming: Benchmarks

The tests that I comment on below are carried out with the minimum possible number of operating system processes (Windows Vista Home Premium), the penultimate controllers of the graph (ATi Catalyst 8.10 + Vista Hotfix) and with a resolution of 1,680×1,050 pixels on a 22-inch screen connected by DVI to the computer. At all times we have tried to maximize the level of images per second, fps, under the configuration indicated in each test.

Counter-Strike Source

CS Source intro

The Counter-Strike: Source is a game that is already quite a few years old, with a graphics engine based on that of the Half-Life 2 which is excellently optimized and works with (almost) any computer.

With the test team, it was expected that the performance would be maximum, and it has not disappointed at all. With CS:Source video settings maxed out, the game was constantly hovering over 40 fps, even reaching 60 fps, the maximum allowed by the game.

The configuration of the Counter-Strike: Source we chose was the following:

Word of Warcraft

WoW WotLK intro

The Word of Warcraft it is a game that uses a lot of memory RAM, since in addition to the load generated by the game itself, addons from third-party developers, which are usually quite poorly implemented and consume huge amounts of memory.

Starting from this point, and having carried out the tests without addons (i.e. with much lower memory load), it is necessary to distinguish two points:

  • Shattrath: It is one of the cities in the game and its characteristic is that it is supercharged with people, both player characters and NPCs. It is possibly the place of the game where the system could go slower.
  • Stormwind o Stormwind: another city, this time a secondary one, whose load level is much lower since it is much less loaded with models, both characters and the city’s own architecture.

In turn, I performed two tests, one with the configuration level at the maximum and the other at the minimum. The results were the following:

WoW test on an ATi 4850

The World of Warcraft It has been a complete surprise, since although its graphic quality is not excellent, it is a game that uses a large number of models simultaneously. In the vast majority of cases, mainly when you are playing alone, the game runs completely smoothly, although when a decent group of people gathers or at certain moments in the game, the level of images per second drops loudly. You can continue playing, but in a much less pleasant way.

Call of Duty 4

Video configuration as follows

CoD 4 config

Although the WoW was the negative surprise, the Call of Duty 4 It has been a positive surprise. With the previously indicated configuration, which we can categorize as average, the game runs completely fluid in practically all the game scenarios. When I say practically all, I want to indicate that, in case of paralysis or the rate of images per second drops, it does so only in certain periods of data loading or at times when panoramic views of the scenarios are seen. They are also a few seconds, and going down to 25-30 fps, not less.

The feeling that remains after a few minutes trying the CoD 4 is that the game runs really well, without slowdowns or problems. The graph behaves perfectly.

Crysis

Crysis intro

The videogame Crysis It is one of the games that requires the most requirements. In fact, many use it to test their equipment and get the most out of it.

In our case, Crysis has behaved in a very positive way. Since the game itself allows you to mark all the settings according to a type of requirement, we have tested two settings:

  • Medium graphic settings: The quality of the game is, with this setting, amazing. The game moves in about 20-25 fps in a fairly stable way, which is an achievement considering that all the opening scenes of the game (about 10-15 minutes from the beginning) are panoramic views of an island, and that it has to load a lot of textures. The game stays at that level of images almost constantly, and in general it does allow you to play fairly well and with ease. A little more power would not have been missed.
  • Low graphic settings: the minimum possible, the quality of the textures of the game descends vertiginously to such an extent that it seems that we are facing a game from five years ago rather than the one they say is the most demanding on the market. With this quality the performance improves significantly and the game moves between 35 and 40 fps, which is a notable difference from the average quality.

With these two simple tests, Crysis is a game that is playable even with the setting set to medium quality. Despite this, it seems that the graphics needs some help, since the experience that we are going to obtain with this equipment will not be the most satisfactory. We can therefore conclude that the Crysis is fairly good, but if we can use a configuration of two 4850, or some other configuration that will be more powerful, much better.

As with the tests on the video games mentioned above, in those carried out on the benchmarking programs, an attempt has also been made to maximize the score, mainly by eliminating unnecessary system processes. All configurations of the following tests have been performed with default parameters of these programs, so that, for example, in the 3D Mark 06 tests, the resolution was not the native one of the monitor or the operating system, but a lower one (1,280 × 1,024 pixels)

HIS ATi HD Radeon 4850

It is a graphics card with which you can enjoy practically all the games on the market. Its price is about 180 euros, depending on the manufacturer and store, although it is usually around that figure.

It is a graph that it is very interesting for those who want to take a small step forward in their computer, and need a high graphics power, both for video games (we have already seen the figures it offers in the four games listed above) and for high definition video (which moves it without any difficulty) or other more professional applications.

The ATi HD Radeon 4850 It is focused on medium/advanced users, but not the most demanding. For them it would be recommended anything else, or a CrossFireX of two of these 4850, or something further: 4870, 4870X2, or similar cards in Nvidia (9800GTX+ onwards, logically including the configurations SLI).

I would like to emphasize the Crossfire configuration of two of these ATi 4850. Taking into account that, according to other tests, computers with a couple of these 4850 usually have a performance of 50% more than with a single graphic, with the data that we have described above we can see how a CrossFireX setup of two 4850s will run any game on the market with a very decent frame rate. We would be talking about a Crysis in medium configuration with a minimum of 30 fps, which is not bad at all. The two graphics cards would have a price of approximately 350 euros, which, at least from my point of view, is not high for the product it is and the power it offers.

Finally, I have to comment on a couple of aspects that must be taken into account very much in mind.

HIS ATi HD Radeon 4850
  • On the one hand, at least the model of HIS what we have tried It has a length well above other graphics on the market. The card occupies a single PCI-Express slot, but I have tried to install it in several computers and it does not fit in all the boxes (even though they are all ATX). To give you an idea, in the image above you can see the difference between the 4850 and an Asus 8500 GT.
  • One of the requirements is to have a moderately powerful power supply, since uses a connector MOLEX additional 6-pin. Although the source does not bring one, in specialized stores an adapter is sold that takes the current from two MOLEX of 4 pins and, from them, one of 6 pins is created. According to ATi, the recommended source is 450 watts.

The number of software tools that can be used to monitor the new series of graphics adapters is still limited to a few applications, the list of which includes the latest version of the GPU-Z utility, which determines both the operating frequencies of the video card and the temperature from the built-in thermal sensors.

ATI Radeon HD 4850 - GPU-Z

As you can see, in the absence of load, the video card reduces the frequencies to 500/1400 MHz (chip/memory) from the standard 625/1986 MHz. Although even at a reduced frequency, the chip heats up to 80°C. In addition to the standard chip temperature, you can also observe the readings of three additional thermal sensors, which, for some reason, are also named GPUs with their own indices. It is possible that the chip has several sensors that take the corresponding data from different blocks of the crystal. The fan speed is 1500 rpm. In this mode, it works quite quietly, and is not audible against the background of an average power supply. Despite the fact that on the main tab the operating frequency of the memory is identified as 993 MHz (effective 1986 MHz), on the Sensors tab it is already displayed as 975 MHz.

But under load with noise, things are worse. It is worth launching any 3D application, and the howl of the turbine becomes noticeable. After such monsters as the Radeon HD 2900 XT, the rumble of this turbine, of course, does not seem so loud, but still noticeable.

After a 10-minute warm-up of the card with the ATITool test, the temperature did not rise above 85°C. But the fan at the same time spun up to 3900 rpm. Although this is even less than half of the fan’s capabilities, even at this speed, the hum of the turbine will perfectly block the noise of any power supply. And the board is so hot that you can’t touch it. And the red-hot common radiator rather does not cool, but only additionally heats elements such as memory. Its overheating may well affect when trying to overclock and limit the upper stable frequency limit.

ATI Radeon HD 4850 - GPU-Z

As you can see, a small cooling system somehow copes with its task, while sacrificing silence. How efficient would such a video card be cooled with a different cooling system? To test this, a Zalman VF900-Cu was installed on the board. This cooler, although not outstandingly efficient by today’s standards, still copes well with cards like the GeForce 8800 GT.

Video card ATI Radeon HD 4850

At minimum speed Zalman VF900-Cu keeps the temperature under load at 64°C, at maximum – at 60°C.

Overclocking

So far, of all the overclocking software for these video cards, we can only use ATI Overdrive from the Catalyst Control Center. The latest version of Riva Tuner 2.09 does not yet support video cards of this family. The maximum available values in ATI Overdrive are limited, and 700 MHz for a graphics chip is quite a small value (considering native 625 MHz). Although, as it turned out, this is too much. This video card worked stably without artifacts at a chip frequency of 685 MHz, a memory of 2150 MHz. Replacing the cooling system did not help much to improve the result. We also note that at 685 MHz there were a couple of freezes in the GRID game, although the rest of the tests (even Crysis) were passed without problems. However, for tests, it was still decided to stop at 685/2150 MHz. Artifact testing was carried out using the ATITool test.

ATI Radeon HD 4850

In percentage terms, overclocking is small, 9.6% for the core and 8% for memory.

How to Overclock a Radeon HD 4850

e ATI Radeon HD 4850 is a performance-focused video card with the graphics processing unit running at 625MHz and 1GB of DDR3 video memory running at 990MHz. Radeon cards are characterized by good overclocking performance. Overclocking is where you increase the speed of your GPU and memory for higher performance. It is mainly used by gamers who want to get every last frame per second of their games. You can easily speed up the HD 4850 through the AMD Catalyst Control Center, which comes installed with the HD 4850 drivers.

Instructions

  1. Right-click on a blank area on the desktop.
  2. Click “AMD Catalyst Control Center” in the menu that opens.
  3. Click the “operation” button. Click on “AMD Overdrive”. Click the “lock” icon to unlock the overdrive function. Click the box that says “Enable AMD Overdrive.”
  4. Click the “Auto Tune” button. Click “Run”. The Auto-Tune option will find the maximum stable GPU and memory settings. When finished, click “Done” and then “OK.” You can also manually increase your GPU and memory settings with the sliders marked “high-performance GPU clock settings” and “high-performance memory clock settings.”
  5. Click the “Test Custom Clocks” button after making settings. When the test is complete, click “OK” to load the settings.

Tips and Warnings

You must download the latest driver package from AMD. The latest driver package comes with the “AMD VISION Engine Control Center”, but it works the same way. If you use the manual option, increase the settings in small increments of 5-10MHz at a time. Your HD 4850 should be able to handle at least 680MHz for the GPU and 1030MHz for memory.

Cooling efficiency and overclocking

Since neither Riva Tuner nor any other program that overclocks ATI/AMD video cards still supports the new Radeon HD4000 family, we will talk about measuring temperature and other indicators in words. During idle, the GPU temperature fluctuates around 78 degrees, while the fan rotates at a speed of 1075 rpm, which is 22% of its maximum possible speed.

Under load, that is, during the run of 9 Firefly Forest tests from the 3DMark’06 test package at 1600×1200 resolution with 4x anti-aliasing and 16x anisotropic filtering, the graphics chip heated up to 84 degrees. The fan speed increased to 1886 rpm, which is 30% of the maximum possible speed. Note that at this speed the noise from the cooling system became noticeable.

As for overclocking, the only available tool for its implementation at the moment is the ATI Overdrive utility built into the control panel of the video card. Alas, this utility does not provide almost any freedom of action, allowing you to increase the frequency of the graphics chip by only 40 MHz, and the memory by 200 “real” MHz. As a result, the video card Radeon HD4870 was overclocked to 790/4400 MHz, which is not serious. However, we still tested the overclocked Radeon HD4870 in Crysis, and you can see the results of this small experiment at the end of this article.

conclusions

The Radeon HD4870 video card turned out to be not only in words, but in fact the most real competitor for the GeForce GTX 260 video card from NVIDIA. We have not seen this for a long time, because the “top” representatives of the two previous families of video cards from AMD could compete with NVIDIA products only in words, but in reality they were too slow. Obviously, the new shader unit with an increased number of stream processors and a changed architecture turned out to be more powerful than the shader unit in the GeForce GTX 260 video card. True, the new product falls short of the GeForce GTX 280, but at the same time it provides comfortable “gameplay” in almost all modern games.

Video cardrecommended priceApproximate price according to price.ru, rub.

Radeon HD4870$29910663 (single sentence)
GeForce GTX 260$39913000
GeForce GTX 280$64920000

With a recommended price of $299, the Radeon HD4870 video card can already be found for 10,663 rubles. At the same time, the GeForce GTX 260 graphics card costs a couple of thousand rubles more. For this amount, you can buy a pair of Radeon HD4850 and put it in a CrossFire bundle, which should be faster in performance than the GeForce GTX 260. Well, the CrossFire bundle from the Radeon HD4870 can be quite opposed to the GeForce GTX 280. By the way, AMD promised significant improvements in the performance of its multi-chip configurations, but this is a topic for our next article.
