The first appearance of AMD Radeon HD 7400M Series discrete graphics took place in late 2011 – early 2012. Not too high performance adapters made it possible to use them to run movies in high enough resolution, but was not entirely suitable for modern games. At present, the capabilities of this card are all the more lacking for gamers, although it can still be used for a home multimedia center.

Specifications Radeon 7400M Series

The main characteristics of the AMD Radeon HD 7400M Series practically do not depend on a specific model – most of the parameters, except for the frequency and type of memory, are the same. The volume, which is from 512 MB to 1 GB, and the bit depth, equal to 64 bits, do not differ either. Among other similar parameters it is worth noting:

  • the presence of 160 stream processors, created on the basis of the already outdated even at the time of the release of the 5D architecture;
  • support for modern and used in most games technologies OpenGL 4.1 and DirectX 11;
  • 40 nm manufacturing process, corresponding to 2009-2010 video card models.

Comparative parameters of the cards of the series are presented in the table:

The performance of less powerful versions using DDR3 memory turns out to be slightly lower – approximately at the level of another GeForce GT 325M mobile card. Their capabilities provide, at most, the launch of a game like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at minimum settings.

More productive options that have already received GDDR5 correspond to graphics adapters for laptops such as the GT 910. Their parameters are enough to run the Crysis 3 game with great difficulty and with a minimum resolution.

How to Overclocking AMD Radeon HD 7400M Gaming: Overview

Among the capabilities of the video card, one can single out support for most video formats and a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600, as well as simultaneous connection of up to 4 monitors. The maximum number of external displays depends on the number of connectors on a laptop that comes with such a graphics adapter. Most laptops with it have HDMI and DisplayPort ports.

It’s hard to say what the price of the AMD Radeon HD 7400M Series was at the beginning of sales, and how much they cost now. Separately, without a laptop, such devices never sold – however, they increased the cost of laptops by about $ 50. A mobile PC with such a video adapter in good condition can be bought on the secondary market for 8000-10000 rubles.

The power consumption parameters of the card are minimal – from 7 to 10 W, depending on the model and load level. This makes it suitable for both standard laptops with a 15.6-inch screen and netbooks with a 13-inch display.

What games will run on AMD Radeon HD 7400M Series

In early 2012, AMD Radeon HD 7400M Series game tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the card, showing the following results:

  • in the football simulator FIFA 2013, the frame rate reached only 16-18 FPS even with the minimum settings – too low for a comfortable game;
  • in the shooter Star Wars: The Old Republic, the indicator turned out to be quite decent – from 20 FPS at medium settings to 51 at the minimum;
  • in the game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at the minimum settings, you could get up to 28 FPS – approximately the boundary value at which you can already play;
  • in a car simulator, values above 30 FPS could only be achieved by setting the minimum screen resolution;
  • resource-demanding game Crysis 2 gave no more than 22 FPS.

Variants of video cards from the same series, but with GDDR5, did not improve the situation much, increasing the number of games launched and the frame rate in them. On the other hand, FPS rose by no more than 10-15%, so none of these graphics adapters can be called gaming.

How to Tune: Overclocking AMD Radeon HD 7400M

By overclocking the AMD Radeon HD 7400M, you can try to improve its performance in games – but you should not count on major changes.

To speed up, standard utilities are used – for example, MSI Afterburner. The processor frequency should be increased, the maximum value of which can be determined using 3DMark and FurMark tests.

It was experimentally verified that video cards from the 7400M series can be overclocked by no more than 15%. The speed of work (which can be estimated, for example, by FPS in games) increased by 10-11%, maximum.

At the same time, you should not try to mine cryptocurrency with such an adapter. Even with minimal power consumption, there will not be enough opportunities to recoup the electricity spent on the laptop.

Download drivers for AMD Radeon HD 7400M Series

For the normal operation of a laptop with such discrete graphics, it is recommended to download the drivers for the Radeon HD 7400M Series from the official page of its manufacturer. The video adapter supports most popular platforms – from Windows 10 to XP. Although most owners of laptops with HD 7400M usually choose Windows 7.

To download the software that ensures the operation of the video card, it is not recommended to use third-party utilities. Most of these programs cope with their main tasks (updating drivers), but they can make changes to the operating system that are not entirely desirable for the user.
