How to play Company of Heroes on Linux
Company of Heroes is a real-time strategy game developed by Relic Entertainment. The game takes place during WWII and was released on Windows, OS X, iOS, Android, and Linux. This is how you can play Company of Heroes on your Linux PC.
Make Company of Heroes work on Linux
Company of Heroes is not a native Linux game, but it works quite well on Linux, thanks to Proton. Unfortunately, however, Proton only runs on the Linux version of Steam.
Instalar Steam
Installing the Linux version of Steam is pretty easy, thanks to Valve’s stellar platform support. Start by opening a terminal window on the desktop (Ctrl + Alt + T or “Terminal” in the application menu).
Once the terminal window is open and ready to use, the installation is ready to begin. Follow the installation instructions below that apply to the Linux operating system you are currently using.
Ubuntu
To get Steam on Ubuntu, you will need to run the following apt install command.
sudo apt install steam
Debian
If you’re using Debian Linux, the best way to get Steam working is through the downloadable DEB package. Using the wget command below, get the latest version of Steam from Valve.
wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steam.deb
Once the Steam DEB package has been downloaded, you can begin the installation. Using the dpkg command then install the latest version of Steam on Debian.
sudo dpkg -i steam.deb
With the Steam DEB package installed, you will need to correct any dependency issues that may have occurred. Using the apt-get install -f command, correct the errors.
sudo apt-get install -f
Arch Linux
Steam is on Arch Linux, and if you are a user, you can install it as long as you have the “multilib” software repository up and running.
To enable “mutlilib” open the /etc/pacman.conf
file in your favorite text editor (as root). Once the text file is open for editing, locate the “multilib” section and remove the # symbol in front of it, as well as those directly below it. Then close the text file and save it.
After saving the text file, use the commands below to get the latest version of Steam up and running on your computer.
sudo pacman -Syy
sudo pacman -S steam
Fedora / OpenSUSE
Both Fedora and OpenSUSE can run Steam through the software repositories included with the operating system out of the box. With that said, the Flatpak version on Steam works much better, and we suggest following those instructions instead.
Flatpak
In order for Steam to work through Flatpak, you will need to install the Flatpak runtime and configure the Flathub app store. To get the runtime working on your system, follow our guide on the subject.
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
With the Flathub app store set up, use the following command to install Steam.
flatpak install flathub com.valvesoftware.Steam
