How to save your files for later in Linux with Stashed – Easy Steps

Stashed is a neat little app that allows users to put files inside it to copy later. It’s great, especially for those on Linux who regularly copy files. Here’s how you can use Stashed to save your files for later copying!

Enabling the Elementary OS App Center repository on Linux

The Stashed app is available as a Flatpak. That being said, it is not available on the Flathub app store like most Flatpak apps. Instead, it is an App Center application. App Center comes with Elementary OS. Although it is part of Elementary OS, App Center can be used by anyone on any Linux operating system. This is possible because App Center uses Flatpak, and users can easily add this repository to their Flatpak configuration.

Therefore, before you can install the Stashed tool on your computer, you will need to enable the App Center repository. To do that, start by opening a terminal window on the Linux desktop.

To open a terminal window on the Linux desktop, you will need to press Ctrl + Alt + T on the keyboard. Or search for “Terminal” in the application menu and run it that way. Once the terminal window is open, you will need to configure the Flatpak runtime.

Installing the Flatpak runtime on Linux is pretty straightforward. All you need to do is install the “flatpak” package on your computer using the package manager included in your operating system.

After configuring the Flatpak runtime on your computer, the App Center Flatpak repository can be enabled. With the flatpak remote-add command below, configure the repository.

flatpak remote-add --user appcenter https://flatpak.elementary.io/repo.flatpakrepo

Stashed installation on Linux

The Stashed app is available from the App Center repository as Flatpak. So if you want to install it on your computer, you will have to install it with the flatpak installation command below.

flatpak install appcenter com.github.hezral.stashed

Build through source code

While installing the Stashed app via the App Center Flatpak repository on Linux is the easiest way to get it up and running, it’s not the only way to go. It is also possible to compile this application from source code using Meson.

In order for it to work on your system, make sure you have the following dependencies installed on your computer. Without these dependencies, Stashed will not compile.

After configuring the dependencies on your computer, you will be able to compile Stashed and install it on your computer using the following commands.

How to save your files for later

To use Stash to save your files for later, open the application. You can start the application by searching for “Stashed” in the application menu. Alternatively, it is also possible to run the program via the command line with the following command.

flatpak run com.github.hezral.stashed

With the Stashed app up and running, follow the step-by-step instructions below.

Paso 1: With the Stashed application open on your Linux desktop, start the Linux file manager. You can find the Linux file manager within the application menu. With the application open, browse for the file you want to save for later.

Paso 2: Once you have located the file you want to save within the Stashed application, click on it to select it. Then drag it to the Stashed window. Repeat this process until you have stored all the files you need.

Paso 3: Go to another location in the Linux file manager where you would like to copy the files that you have stored within the application. For example, if you want to put your saved files in the “Documents” folder, click “Documents” in the Linux file manager.

Paso 4: Go back to the Stashed app and click on your stored files with your mouse. Do not release the mouse button. Otherwise, you will need to reselect the files.

When selecting files within Stashed, drag them to the location where you want to save them.

Paso 5: With your files copied, find the “Delete” button within the application and click on it. When you select the “Delete” button, Stash will forget the files it has stored in it and will leave you with a blank window.
