How to see the location history of your cell phone on Google Maps!

The Android device with GPS that you carry everywhere in your pocket, sends the location of each place you go to Google computers. The company collects this information and creates a record or location history, which you can easily consult by entering the Google Maps service. This can come in handy when you can no longer track it.

To see where your cell phone was before or its rides, possibly including its last location Before turning off or losing internet connection, you only need the Google account registered on the device.

I recommend you proceed from a PC, because this way you will be able to see more complete information and it will be easy for you to edit or delete data by location or date.

I clarify that this record is not perfect. The locations are not always accurate. Sometimes places have appeared to me that I have never been, although perhaps this is due to some of my Google accounts registering them on other devices, as I will explain later. Another option is that possibly I only passed by or was near those places but did not actually visit them, however the lack of precision of this system confused my locations with others very close.

Accede a Google Maps

Enter the web version of Google Maps (sign in with the same Gmail account that you use on your phone) and choose the date for which you want to see the locations. Basically, what will appear will be the tour of your cell phone on a map. All places will appear where has the mobile been.

Another way to enter is from the your Google account panel. In the “Your activity data” section, tap on “Location history” and then on “Go to your routes”.

You can filter the locations by year, month, or day. Even see all the locations since you activated the Google account on your cell phone or devices.

I just said “devices”, because by default the locations of all the devices where you entered your Google account are unified on the same map. This may be the cause of you seeing locations you’ve never been, but there was one of the devices where you once entered your Google account and you may not remember it. If this is a problem for you, you should check which devices associated with your account are contributing locations to your history and deactivate the ones you consider necessary, something that I explain below. Another option is to use a different Gmail account on each device you use.

Last cell phone location

If you look at the left panel of the history, each location has time, period of permanence and is ordered chronologically. So you just have to scroll all the way down to see the last location.

You can also activate the option “Show raw data” (from the gear wheel at the bottom of the screen). You will see red dots on the map, where you can hover over to see the time you were at that particular location.

However, this raw data means that it is potentially wrong, especially the points that are far from the course, so you should be suspicious of them. The precision radius of each point means that you could be anywhere within that circle.

In Android

To see the history of previous locations from your device, open the application Google Maps. Tap the menu (top left) and choose Your timeline. From here you can view locations by date, edit location’s date and time, delete locations, add notes, among other things.

How to turn off location history

You may think that there is no problem that Google has or saves the places where you were or where you passed. As long as someone else does not have it, especially if it is from your environment, it should be enough.

But you should know that Google can identify you and hand over your locations to the Police. If unfortunately you were or were passing by a place where a crime or crime occurred, automatically you could be accused of suspect, even if you haven’t had something to do with it.

Google should inform you in advance by email that it will deliver this information if the Police request it, and if you act quickly you could block that request with a lawyer, but no one wants to get involved in such a process.

Turn off location history really simple. You can do it from your Google account myaccount.google.com. Log in with your account, tap on the “Data and Personalization” tab, “Location History” (direct link). In this way, the locations of all your devices connected to it will no longer be saved or registered in that account.

To deactivate the location history of a device only, you must go to your activity controls of your Google account or myactivity.google.com (direct link) and in the Location History section, uncheck the device that you no longer want to record its locations in your account.

Another way to deactivate a device is to do it from Google Maps for Android. Select Your timeline> Three-dot up button> Settings & privacy> Location history is on. Choose the account, under “Location history” tap on “Devices in this account” and uncheck the one you want.

However, even disabling that history, Google will still be able to know your locations through your activity in other applications. Therefore, you must also deactivate this possibility from the control panel of your Google account, “Data and Personalization” tab, option “Web and app activity«. Unfortunately doing this can affect your experience on the web and applications. Keep that in mind.
