How to start and join a Slack meeting – Easy Steps

Slack is a messaging tool. It is not a video conferencing tool, although it can record and send video to a channel or person. In comparison, many business and productivity tools that target workspaces tend to have video conferencing and messaging tools built in, for example Microsoft Teams. This means that Slack is missing from the area and to fill this gap, it has crowds.

A Slack meeting is an audio call. This is a premium Slack feature, so those with a free Slack account / workspace won’t be able to use it. A meeting is a continuous event within a channel. As long as the event is active, you can join. The feature is available on both the desktop and the Slack mobile apps.

Start a Slack meeting – Desktop

To start a Slack meeting on the desktop, follow these steps.

1. Open the Slack app.
2. Select the channel or direct message thread where you want to start the huddle.
3. In the left navigation column, look at the bottom and you will see a switch icon with a headset. Click on it to start the meeting. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Control + Shift + H or Command + Shift + H to start a meeting.

Note: You may or may not receive an alert when there is an active group on a channel. This depends on your notification settings, however you can set alerts for a DM thread or channel where you are notified when a meeting starts.
