How to watch Google Drive movies on Chromecast

Google’s Chromecast or Android TVs with Chromecast built-in are a great way to easily watch movies from a variety of devices on your big-screen TV. But storing video files across multiple devices is a hassle, so using Google Drive as your personal online movie library is a great solution. However, Google Drive doesn’t natively support streaming directly from the app, so you’ll need another way to stream the file. Here are some step-by-step methods you should try to be able to watch Google Drive movies on your Chromecast.

Cast using Google Photos

If you use Google Drive, chances are you also use Google Photos. Fortunately, Photos supports image and video streaming, making it a decent solution for streaming your Google Drive movies.

Cast using Google Photos

There are two ways to view your Drive files using Google Photos. In the first method, navigate to the desired file in Drive. Tap the three vertical dots icon next to the file name and select To open with. Wait for the file to download and press open with photos. The video will start playing and you can cast it to your Chromecast using the familiar cast button in the top right corner.

You can also upload your Google Drive movies and photos directly to Google Photos. They will appear in your Photos app alongside your other images for easy distribution.

As of July 10, 2019 there will be no more ways to sync both apps automatically, so you will have to download the files manually. To do this, go to photos.google.com and click the download button at the top right. Select the new Google Drive options and upload your movies.

Stream movies from Google Drive with a dedicated app

The above method is fine for occasional video watching, but it’s not suitable if you have a large library of Google Drive movies to watch on your big-screen TV. Instead, a dedicated streaming app is the best option, and there are several that support streaming from Google Drive and other sources.

Some popular options include AllCast, Local Cast for Chromecast, and BubbleUPnP. These apps are ad supported with many pro features if you want to turn off ads and get the best video quality. Although user interfaces and functionality vary from app to app, the general idea is the same. I’ll use BubbleUPnP as an example to watch your Google Drive movies on Chromecast.
