Intel hires a manufacturing process veteran to change gears

The theme of production processes in home Intel it is extremely topical and very delicate. The company, by its own admission, has aimed too high in the development of the 10 nanometers and this has jeopardized the timing of arrival on the market: the first products were expected 2/3 years ago, but as we know they only debuted this year, and only in the mobile field with the Ice Lake CPUs.

The news of the last few hours, the official roadmap and the most recent statements suggest (or hope if you prefer) that, having passed the 10 nanometer rock, from 2021 onwards with the advent of the 7 nanometer, Intel should return – barring unforeseen circumstances – to the traditional every two years in its continuous miniaturization work.

The problems in this area can be technical in nature, but as we have sometimes seen also human. Intel's decision to target a 10-fold increase in density over 10 nanometers over 10 nanometers led to such a delay that allowed other companies to recover the existing gap. Therefore it is interesting to learn, as reported by Reuters, that Intel has hired Dr. Gary Patton, a former CTO (technology director) of GlobalFoundries and previously top of IBM Microelectronics (acquired by GF in 2015).

Patton has dealt with the most advanced production processes in GlobalFoundries, until the moment when the company (born from the former production branch of AMD) decided to abandon that trend to devote itself to less expensive production processes and / or supervised by companies such as TSMC and Samsung.

In the ranks of the house in Santa Clara, the new manager will take care of doing the job trait d’union for everything related to the development of a project: choice of the production process, yields, performance, costs and ability to reach the market at the right time with attractive products in terms of functionality and price.

Gary Patton, Intel's new purchase

Precisely Patton becomes “corporate vice president” and “general manager for the suitability of the projects” (design enablement) and will report directly to Mike Mayberry, the company's current CTO.

Its technical preparation certainly makes it a valid purchase for Intel, especially in a complex moment from which the company can learn and above all find the starting point: the entry in recent years of men such as Murthy Renduchintala, Jim Keller and Raja Koduri, of undoubted preparation in the field of architecture, gives hope in the arrival of very interesting news in the future, but as they say “who will live, will see”.
