Intel reveals specifications for Xe-HPG mobile

Two is well on its way to becoming three, as Intel gradually enters the graphics card market with new dedicated models for the first time in over two decades. The scalable Xe architecture uses the same concept for integrated graphics in the “Tiger Lake” and “Rocket Lake” processor families as in high-performance computing centers.

For some time now, the lightweight DG1 has been the only consumer product among the company’s dedicated graphics cards, but in enthusiast circles, variants with the DG2 circuit are more attractive and stamped Xe-HPG – an extension that stands for High Performance Gaming. The head of the graphics division, Raja Koduri, has indicated that performance on a par with the Geforce RTX 3070 may be on the menu, and now the company is inadvertently revealing various configurations of DG2 graphics cards for laptops.

It is the well-known Twitter profile Komachi Ensaka which has produced documentation from Intel’s website intended for system builders. The Twitter post that shares the information has now been removed, but Videocardz has put its hands on the footage and reports that the mobile series is divided into five performance levels. As in previous rumors, the top card is specified to 512 computing units (EU) paired with 16 GB of GDDR6 memory over a 256-bit memory bus.

The DG2 circuit comes in three versions where the full-scale version of the largest has just 512 EU, while the next step is 384 EU and the last 128 EU. However, the documentation suggests that scaled-down variants with 256 and 96 active calculation units in the future will also be alternatives for laptops. For the two simplest cards, the memory amount stays at 4 GB over a 64-bit wide bus, while 8 and 12 GB GDDR6 memory with 128- and 192-bit wide buses refer to the 256 and 384 EU variants, respectively.

Also values ​​for Total Graphics Power (TGP) figures in the image material, information concerning the power solutions of the graphics solutions. In turbo mode, levels of up to 150 watts are mentioned – in the same district as Nvidia’s mobile Geforce RTX 3080. With a suggested performance level close to the RTX 3070, this suggests that energy efficiency is not necessarily the strongest side of the Xe-HPG family.

In addition, it strikes laptop-oriented documentation states that DG2-based cards will also reach the market as plug-in cards, but the future will show if this applies to all models. In conclusion, it is stated that the fresh graphics solutions will be housed under the covers of laptops with both “Alder Lake-P” and “Tiger Lake-H” processors, where the latter will be released sometime during the first half of the year. More powerful Xe graphics are thus not very distant, although the plug-in cards may take longer.
