Intel unveils graphics cards at CES 2019

In connection with AMD’s graphics manager taking a leave of absence and later leaving the company to move to arch-rival Intel, it became clear that the latter intended to enter the graphics card market. The recruitment took place towards the end of 2017, which in practice means that any new architecture with Raja Koduri at the helm would take at least 4 years.

However, there is nothing to say that Intel is relying on a high-profile name from a competitor to develop an architecture that can meet AMD and Nvidia. Tweaktown now reports that Intel has taken the final step with its first graphics circuit, which can be interpreted as the company having a design completed.

According to the information, Intel plans to announce something related to this at the end of the year, with the aim set for a launch shortly after the turn of the year at the electronics fair CES in Las Vegas. What is not clear is whether Intel’s first step in the market since Intel 740 has a focus on gaming or whether it will be a computing card, which goes up against Nvidia’s series Tesla and Quadro.

Today’s graphics architectures Intel uses as integrated solutions in processors are simply called “Generation” followed by a number, which is often abbreviated to, for example, Gen 9 used in Skylake, Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake. The first part of the company’s brand new architecture is believed to be called Arctic Sound and the sequel to this Jupiter Sound.
