“Intel’s architecture Gen12 the biggest change in 14 years”

When Intel launched the company’s fourth generation integrated graphics chips, it brought about a major architectural change in the instruction set (ISA). This was named i965 and Intel’s graphics circuits have since had the same foundation, where every generation that followed brought all sorts of additions and changes.

In 2020, Intel will introduce new portable processors in the Tiger Lake family. These are equipped with integrated graphics circuits called Gen12, which is part of the Xe family’s architectures. Intel has previously announced that the Xe family will add a new architectural foundation. This is now confirmed by developers working with open source drivers for Intel graphics chips.

Developers working on the graphics framework Mesa are working on compiling for the Gen12 architecture.

The comments are published on the developer portal Gitlab, more specifically in the section for the Mesa graphics interface. Developer Francisco Jerez describes there that the Gen12 architecture affects almost all instructions and registry types used during compilation. The biggest change is said to be that register synchronization is no longer part of the architecture.

Gen12 is planned to include one of the most in-depth reworks of the Intel EU ISA since the original i965. The encoding of almost every instruction field, hardware opcode and register type needs to be updated in this merge request

This function is responsible for ensuring that readings from and writes to registers are kept synchronized. With the function removed, the responsibility instead falls on the compiler to synchronize register operations if these risk ending up in conflict with each other. The rest of the post consists of a discussion of the work that remains to adapt compilers from the old i965 to Gen12.

Intel Tiger Lake will be released in 2020 and is primarily expected to be intended for laptops. These will be manufactured at 10 nanometers, have the architecture Willow Cove which succeeds the fresh Sunny Cove and not least the brand new graphics architecture Gen12 or “Arctic Sound”.
