Kazakhstan is ready to buy 1.5 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas annually

ASTANA, 15 Oct – PRIME. Kazakhstan is ready to purchase 1.5 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas annually, President of the Republic Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said at talks with Turkmen leader Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

Tokayev noted that at the meeting on Saturday, the leaders of the two countries discussed in detail the prospects for mutually beneficial partnership in the gas industry.

“Last year, we managed to achieve breakthrough agreements on the implementation of joint projects in this area, our companies QazaqGaz and Turkmengas signed contracts for the import of Turkmen gas. I express my gratitude to the President of Turkmenistan for his personal support in promoting this project. We are interested in concluding a long-term agreement and We are ready to increase the volume of gas imports up to 1.5 billion cubic meters per year,” he said.

According to Tokayev, Kazakhstan is also ready to participate in the implementation of major energy initiatives of Turkmenistan, exchange experience, develop mutually beneficial projects in the field of gas processing and gas chemistry. “Taking into account the interest of both sides, the governments were instructed to work out these areas as well,” the head of state said.

Berdimuhamedov is in Kazakhstan on his first state visit.

In terms of natural gas reserves, Turkmenistan is among the top four countries in the world along with Russia, Iran and Qatar. The country is also the leader in pipeline natural gas supplies to China.
