Merkel says she has no regrets about large-scale purchases of Russian gas
MOSCOW, 13 Oct – PRIME. Angela Merkel defended her decision as chancellor to buy significant amounts of natural gas from Russia, reports the Associated Press.
“Based on the conditions of that time, it was very rational and obvious to receive pipeline gas, including from Russia, which was cheaper than LNG from other parts of the world,” Merkel said.
The ex-chancellor added that she does not regret her decision to buy gas from the Russian Federation, stressing that “even during the Cold War, Russia was a reliable energy supplier.”
Merkel noted that Germany needs to diversify energy supply channels against the backdrop of the country’s refusal from coal-fired power plants and nuclear energy. According to her, it is obvious that Germany needs gas during this transitional period.
