Microsoft buys Corp.com to cover an old security hole

The corp.com domain It was put up for auction in recent weeks by Mike O'Connor, the one who originally recorded it about 26 years ago. Auction base: 1.7 million US dollars, a figure that we can think of as a first analysis that is absolutely not justified for what is ultimately a simple web address.

Corp.com, however, is not just any domain: in the past Microsooft has used the name corp in initial versions of its Windows operating system to indicate the default or reference path for your Active Directory, leaving the user the possibility to modify it at his own discretion. Many network administrators, however, have left that parameter configured in that way: checking the corp.com domain on the card would therefore allow attackers to have access to numerous Windows systems configured in this way.

It is clear therefore that if placed in the wrong hands the corp.com domain could prove to be a so-called Trojan horse for security: there are many organizations whose network infrastructure has been configured in this way in the past without having been in the meantime changed.

As early as 2009, Microsoft released a security update to address this potential security problem. In order to protect its customers from potential further problems, Microsoft would therefore have purchased this domain name.

We don't know how much Microsoft bought this domain name; we believe it possible that the negotiation was closed less than the auction price, a figure that if confirmed would in any case represent a small investment for a company that invoices over 125 billion dollars with profits for about 1/4 of this figure .
